Lighthouse Heifer Tops at £2850

The April Borderway Monthly Dairy Day Sale was brimming with quality with an outstanding array of recently calved cows and heifers on offer from many of the leading herds in the north of England and Scotland.  The sale featured several breeds including Holstein, British Friesian, Ayrshire, Brown Swiss and Fleckvieh cross bred animals selling.  Trade topped at £2850 for a Holstein heifer with the average for milking heifers coming to £1939 with 71 animals selling for or more than £2000.  Holstein cows topped at £2450 to average just over £2000, Brown Swiss heifers topped at £2500 with Cross Bred Montbeliarde topping at £2220.  

The sale was sponsored by North West Farmers with the top price heifer consigned by the Hastwell family from Kirby Stephen receiving the winning ticket.  She was sired by Westcoast Lighthouse and was bred from a VG88 Phantom dam.  This super balanced heifer with perfect feet and legs and a worldie of an udder sold for £2850.  The Hastwell’s sold another four heifers to average £2492 with a daughter of Seagull-Bay Stone selling for £2550. 

The Lyle family from Nether Pratis Farm in Fife sold thirteen heifers to average £1952 and topped at £2420 for Cambus Receive Ebony.

The dispersal of the Broughton Holstein herd continued with another fabulous group of cows and heifers with ten animals averaging £2028.  Broughton Flop sold for £2400, she was sired by Swissbec Brekem and was bred from a super high production dam.  An Excellent sixth lactation cow by Numero Uno sold for £2050 and a special second lactation cow by Comestar Lineman sold for £2350.  

Holstein cows averaged £2012 and topped at £2450 for Errolston Gauntlet Dream. She was consigned by the Davidson family from near Gretna who sold another four cows to average £2325.

A small number of Ayrshire heifers topped at £2150 for a heifer giving 33kgs from the Stevensons’s herd near Stranraer.  She was sired by Cuthill Towers Roderick and bred a super high testing dam.  

British Friesian animals were once again in demand with their average coming to £1848 and topped at £1950 for a heifer from The Neil’s of Thornington Farm.

Robert and Shelia McColm from High Boreland Farm near Stranraer sold fifteen Brown Swiss as part of their ongoing dispersal sale and topped at £2500 for Soulseat Rembrandt Lauren.  This ultra-stylish heifer was ready to show and has a massive future in the show ring. 

Cross bred dairy cattle sold well with Fleckvieh, Montbeliarde and Jersey crosses all selling well.  They topped at £2220 for a Cross bred Montbeliarde consigned by Andrew Graves from Tallentire.  Andrew sold six heifers to average almost £2100. 

A very nice group of eleven British Friesian heifer calves born in February topped at £620 to average £501.
