On Monday 11th April, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A better entry of 71 prime bulls forward with a far lighter, lesser quality show evident. Despite this a fantastic trade was achieved throughout. Setting a new centre record for the Simmental breed – the previous record was only just set last week – at £2392 was Messrs Goldsbrough, Oakrigg Farm, Moffat selling 1076kg to £2404 and purchased by A & D Meats. Pure bred Luings sold to £2163 for 867kg from Messrs Simpson, Poole Bank Farm, Windermere again purchased by A & D Meats. Heaviest Limousin this week was only 738kg from Messrs Horn, Lower Griseburn, Appleby selling at £2033 to Bowland Foods. Top overall pence per kilo of 285.5p was paid to Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth for a 647kg Limousin cross. Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow, Wigton sold to a top of 281.5p both purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers Bradford. Dairy bulls sold to a top of £1564 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Story, Blackrigg, Longtown purchased by Bowland Foods and the top dairy pence per kilo of 229.5p went to a 558kg Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton. PRIME CATTLE: An outstanding entry of 82 prime steers and heifer forward at Borderway’s weekly sale whereby 30 cattle sold over £1800, 20 over £1900 and 9 sold over £2000 to a day’s overall top of £2141 for a marvellous 732kg Limousin cross from Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Hewetson also sold another to £2127. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold to £2108 and Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton to £2046 purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold a 691kg British Blue steer to £2097 and again purchased by Ralph Pearson. Charolais crosses from Messrs Cope, Kirkland Guards, Wigton sold to £1835 and purchased by Andrew Graham. Top overall pence per kilo steer came from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake peaking at 303.5p to Ralph Pearson.

Heifers saw a day’s top of £2003 for a 669kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands, Maryport selling to Ralph Pearson. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle peaked at £1969 for 671kg and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle who also bought the next best a 707kg crossbred from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth at £1969. A Charolais cross from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle achieved £1818 and was purchased by Andrew Graham. Top overall pence per kilo on the day was for a 606kg Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse peaking at 315.5p and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop.

CAST COWS The largest entry of 384 cast cows and stock bulls in the UK was on offer at Borderway with 123 vendors with included many new vendors taking advantage of the flying trade at Carlisle. 52 cows and stock bulls old for £1500 or more and 39 sold for over 200p per kilo. Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm sold the top priced British Blue x cow for 822kg at 262.5p totalling £2157 to Owain Llyr. Denis Cadzow & Co, Duncrahill’s run of Limousin x cows topped at 900kg at 216.5p totalling £1948 and 864kg at 222.5p totalling £1922 purchased by Pickstocks and Phillip Bowes. DA Harrison & Co, Hill House Farm’s run of outstanding cows topped at 736kg at 257.5p totalling £1895 for a Limousin x, 840kg at 205.5p totalling £1726 for a Simmental x and 674kg at 234.5p totalling £1580 for a British Blue x purchased by Owain Llyr, Michael Helliwell and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Kearton, Wysehill Farm’s run of cows topped at 757kg at 231.5p totalling £1752 for a British Blue x bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Timm, West Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 834kg at 207.5p totalling £1730 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Musgrave, Hill Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 800kg at 213.5p totalling £1708 bought by Pickstocks. Messrs Story & Son, Woodhead Farm’s run of Limousin x cows topped at 667kg at 242.5p totalling £1617, 652kg at 229.5p totalling £1496 and 712kg at 227.5p totalling £1619 all purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Mason, Bank Farm sold a British Blue x heifer for 527kg at 231.5p totalling £1220 and 524kg at 227.5p totalling £1192 both bought by Jewitt Meats. 252 dairy cast cows sold to average an amazing 155.5p being up 5p on the week. Messrs Holliday, Dobcross Hall sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 857kg at 186.5p totalling £1598 and 892kg at 176.5p totalling £1574 to Pickstocks and Messrs Roberts. Messrs Dockray, Kelsick House sold two Holstein x cows for 871kg at 183.5p totalling £1598 and 888kg at 179.5p totalling £1593 bought by Sean McGimpsey and Phillip Bowes. Bluestone Farming sold an Austrian Fleckvieh x cow for 877kg at 178.5p totalling £1565 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End sold a Holstein x cow for 798kg at 195.5p totalling £1560 to Michael Helliwell. PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime sheep included the annual Easter show of single and pairs which was kindly judged by Jim Mulholland, Butchers, Great Orton who made the following awards.

The sale was led by the 1st prize single hogg, a fantastic Beltex shown by ME & JJ Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton which sold at £300 to D Griffiths, Ellesmere. The 1st prize pair of hoggs came from Messrs Story, Woodhead and they sold at £250 again to Messrs Griffiths. Top hoggs per kilo were the 2nd prize pair of hoggs from JE & JJ Fell, a pair of Texels which sold for 659.1ppk to Robert Skelton, Maryport. Spring lambs saw a lift on the year topping at £185 and 462.5p for the leading single for Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall who also won the pairs which sold for £166 (442.7ppk) to Messrs Wright of Boston and Morgan Helliwell respectively.

CAST EWES:H&H held their weekly sale of cast sheep on Monday where trade remained very strong. Topping the sale at £220 was a Texel ewe from Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft. Suffolks sold to £182 from Messrs Watson, Oakbank. Mules sold to £138 for a pen of 3 from Messrs Crozier, Faugh Beeches. Swales sold to great rates topping at £118 for a pen of 4 from Messrs Moore, Highside. Rams topped at £190 for 2 Leciester x Texels from Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow.
