Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 18th April, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A good flashy show of 64 prime bulls were forward on Bank Holiday Monday seeing a very buoyant  trade throughout the sale. Top overall was the heaviest bull of the day at 815kg, for a Limousin cross bred by Messrs Bunting, Midtown Farm, Dumfries achieving £2131.23 purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Others sold to £2018.49 for 707kg Limousin from Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Wigton. Charolais peaked at £1903 for 745kg, from Messrs Hiddleston, Newmains, Dumfries and others to £1881.88 for 728kg, from Messrs McClanachan, Millhill Farm, Lockerbie.

Top pence per kilo was for the aforementioned 707kg, for Allerby Hall, Wigton achieving 285.5ppk. Messrs Milburn, Wallend Farm, Brampton sold a 637kg British Blue cross to 269.5ppk.

Dairy bred bulls were fantastic to sell and achieved the dearest trade to date. Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown sold to the top of £1638.30 for a Holstein Friesian. Messrs Graham’s run of 5 Holsteins averaged a healthy £1491.88. Top overall pence per kilo of 223.5ppkwent to Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton for a British Friesian purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE: A much smaller entry of 44 prime steers and heifers were forward on Bank holiday Monday with yet another fantastic trade seen throughout. Thirteen animals achieved over £1800 and five sold to over £2000 with a days overall top of £2067.07 for a 767kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold the second top of £2058.87 for 734kgs purchased by Ralph Pearson. Top priced Charolais cross came from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie selling to 746kg to £2017.93 and was purchased again by Ralph Pearson. Top price pence per kilo of 280.5ppk went to Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks.

Heifers were seen to peak at £1999.69 for a 742kg, Limousin cross from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Appleby, purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Blue crosses from Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie to £1920 for 844kg, and purchased by Andrew Graham. Top overall pence per kilo of the day was a 643kg Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle peaking at 293.5ppk and purchased by Ralph Pearson, Bradford. Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton’s best sold to 291.5ppk and saw a healthy average of 278.5ppk for a run of 9 heifers averaging 566kg.

CAST COWS: A smaller show of 162 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer with an amazing average of 171.5ppk up 6p. 54 beef cast cows averaged 1981.1ppk being up 12p.

Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm sold the top priced 90 month old Limousin cow for 818kg, 243.5ppk or £1991 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Oliver, Cawfields run of cows topped at 694kg, 248.5ppk or £1724 and 732kg, 231.5ppk or £1694 for a British Blue cross and 725kg, 231.5ppk or £1678 and 639kg, 259.5ppk or £1658 for a Limousin cross cow purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Michael Helliwell and Owain Llyr. Rachel Smith, Westhill Farm sold the top price Aberdeen Angus  cow sold for 790kg, 206.5ppk or £1631 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Simmentals topped at 821kg, 193.5ppk or £1588from Messrs Cowx & Son, Town End Farm to Michael Helliwell.

108 dairy cast cows sold to average an amazing 159.3ppk up 4p on the week. Mr Andrew Graham, Kirkhouse sold a 100 month old Dutch Fleckvieh old cow for 849kg, 208.5ppk or £1770 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Miller, Tarn Lodge Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 804kg, 188.5ppk or £1515 to Les Fell. Holstein heifers topped at 196.5ppk (x2) 194.5ppk from Messrs Morley, Hadderdale.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale od prime sheep saw a reduction in numbers forward, due to producers coming to the end of their hoggs and the Bank Holiday also playing its part, however a flying trade for all classes was witnessed.

LAMBS: A small entry of spring lambs averaged £143.60 to £148 (x2) and 352.4ppk for Suffolks from Messr Atkinson, The Gill, Wigton.

HOGGS: Hoggs met a sensational enquiry throughout with Mr John Fell, Stanger Hill leading the way again this week, with a pair of 49kg selling to £198 per head or 404ppk selling to Mr Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Campbell, Carsewalloch sold Beltex hoggs to 400ppk to Mr Robert Skelton.

CAST SHEEP: The weekly sale of cast sheep sold to a cracking trade yet again for all types. Topping at £206 was a Leicester ram from Messrs Fisher, Reaygarth. Ewes peaked at £192 on 2 occasions, firstly for a Texel ewe from Messrs Mounsey, Ashfield and secondly for a Beltex cross ewe from Messrs Dickinson, High House. Strong first cross types achieved a flying trade selling to £160 plus.

Horned ewes topped at £134 for two Jacob ewes from Messrs Holliday, Rashfield, with Herdwicks topping at £92 from Messrs Holliday, Newbampton. Cheviots to £128 from Messrs Dempster, Castlehill.
