Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 2,834 sheep were forward consisting of 2,307 prime hoggs and 487 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £188 were a pen of five 43kg Beltex cross hoggs from Messrs Mason, East Farm, Malton.

Topping at 475.7p/kg was a 37kg Beltex cross hogg which sold for £176 from Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York. Another pen of six 37kg hoggs sold to make £171 (462.2p/kg), with a pen of seventeen 38kg hoggs selling for £167 439.5p/kg also from Boscar Flats.

Next selling for £185 were a pen of seven 42kg and a pen of sixteen 45kg hoggs also making £185 both from Messrs Mason, East Farm, with a final pen of twenty hoggs breaking the £180 mark making £183.50 for 46kg also from this home.

Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton sold a pen of ten 38kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £169 (444.7p/kg). A pen of 31kg made £137 (441.9p/kg) and a pen of four 34kg hoggs making £150 (441.2p/kg), and a pen of five 40kg selling for £176 (440p/kg) all from Stanger Hill.

An SQQ average of 306.2p/kg and an overall sale average of 282.5p/kg and £130.74 was achieved for 2,307 prime hoggs with over 900 being horned and Mule hoggs.

Hill cheviot hoggs sold to £131.50 for a pen of nine 57kg hoggs from Messrs Turnbull, Boghall, Fife with three pens of 30, 27 & 24 47kg hill cheviot hoggs all selling for £126.50 from Boghall.

A pen of 32 43kg Blackfaced hoggs sold to £122 (283.7p/kg), with another pen of 32 43kg Blackfaced hoggs making £121.50 (282.6p/kg) and a pen of 31 (281.8p/kg) all sell from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown.

Swaledale hoggs sold to 264.3p/kg for a pen of 20 35kg hoggs making £92.50 and a pen of 47 45kg Swaledale hoggs making £117.50 and (261.1p/kg).

The run of 270 Blackfaced hoggs sold to average 45.5kg £123.73 and 272p/kg from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm.

Cast sheep continued being another flying trade, with these topping at £230 for a Texel from Messrs Pedley, Yore House, Sedbergh.

Charollais ewes sold to £200 from Messrs Gill, Bowes Cross Farm, Barnard Castle.

Cast rams sold to top at £200 for a Suffolk from Messrs Jackson, Clarks Farm, Penrith.
