Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 25th April, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A shortage of bulls evident with only 64 forward seeing one of the dearest trades ever recorded in Borderway with 10 selling over £1800 and 7 achieving £2000 or more up to a days overall top of £2728.45 for 911kgs British Blue from Messrs Carr, Little Bavington, Newcastle .  An 853kg Blue from Messrs Parsons, Slealands, Longtown to £2469.44 and Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold 769kgs British Blue cross to £2441.58.  Limousins to £2397.65 for 806kgs from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Brampton all of the above were purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Beef Shorthorns to £2365.36 for 1013kgs from Messrs Steen, Coxhill Farm, Moffat and purchased by A & D Meats.  Charolais from Messrs Goldie, Townfoot, Dumfries to £2296.23 to Bowland Foods.  Top overall pence per kilo of 317.5p went to Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan for his aforementioned British Blue crossbred.  Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill, Lockerbie sold top priced Galloway to £1871.50 for 788kgs.

Dairy bred cattle sold to a record at £1976.93 for 986kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Murray, Conheath Farm, Dumfries purchased by A & D Meats.  Top pence per kilo of 251.50p was paid to Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown for a 655kgs.  Swedish Red and Whites, montbeliard to 244.5p from Seymour Farms, Wigton and Holstein Friesians from Messrs Dixon, Hedley East Farm, Newcastle to 234.50p

PRIME CATTLE: A larger entry of 86 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly Primestock sale with a great trade seen throughout yet again.  19 animals sold over £1900 and 8 sold over £2000 to a days overall top of £2180 for a 780kgs Limousin heifer from Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Other heifers sold to £2059.75 for 770kgs from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill.  Top overall pence per kilo of 301.5p was paid to Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton for a 563kg Limousin cross purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Airey, The Close to 299.5p purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers.

Steers saw a day’s top of £2127.23 for a 753kg Limousin cross purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold 751kg to £2121.58 and purchased by Ralph Pearson, Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks sold another 739kgs to £2080.28 again purchased by Ralph Pearsons.  Top overall pence per kilo of £293.5p for a 668kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. CAST COWS: A large entry of 372 Cast cows and Stock bulls were on offer to the dearest trade to date.  139 beef cows sold to an amazing average of 200ppk and 58 selling for over 200ppk. Messrs O’kell, Birdswood Farm sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 1002kg, 284.5ppk or £2850 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs McGarva, Nether Abbington Bigga sold a British Blue cow for 904kg, 251.5ppk or £2273 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Richardson of Whithead Brow sold the top price Limousin cow for 851kg, 275.5ppk or £2191 again to Mr Kirkpatrick. Mr Brian Hall of Ainstable Hall run of limousin cows sold to average 753kg, 231.7ppk £1751 and topped at 921kg, 234.5ppk, £2159 to Messrs Owain Llyr.

Messrs Nixon, Ribton house sold a top price Aberdeen Angus cow for 848kg, 221.5ppk, £1878 to Michael Helliwell. Firm of Hugh Sloan sold the top price Simmental cow for 899kg, 203.5ppk, £1829 to Messrs Roberts.

233 dairy cast cows were forward and sold to average 158.7ppk, which included 10 jerseys with trade for all classes being great throughout. Messrs Watson of Howrigg Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 1024kg, 175.5ppk, £1707 to Pickstocks. Messrs Carruthers of Glenzierfoot farm sold the top price Fleckvieh cow for 848kg, 197.5ppk, £1674 to Michael Helliwell. Balgregan Farms sold top price heifers for 625kg, 219.5ppk, £1371 to Mr Les Fell.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 25th April 2022 H&H held their weekly sale of Prime Hoggs & Prime Lambs. A slightly larger show forward this week with a very seasonal mixed show, all classes were very much in demand with well finished sorts intertitular seeing a flying trade.

LAMBS- 64 spring lambs forward today sold to £148 or 389.5p for a smart Texel lamb from Messrs D&J Richardson, Whitehead Brow selling to Messrs Robert Skelton.

CAST SHEEP: On Monday 25th April H&H held their weekly sale of Cast Ewes and Tups where the trade continues to rise with all classes selling with ease. Topping today’s sale at £196 for a Beltex Ewe from Messrs Bennett, Ellonby Hall with many cast sheep selling easily £170 +. Mules topped at £138 from Messrs Maughan, Beck Farm. Texel’s reached £190 form Messrs Telford at Edenlin. Messrs Dodd, Tundergarth sold Romney ewes to £130. Tups sold to great rates averaging £17 for 13 tups sold topping at £194 from Messrs Watson, Beech House.
