On Monday 2nd May, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS

A very good entry of 92 prime bulls forward at the bank holiday Monday sale of primestock where all classes would see an slight easing on the week. Topping the sale at £2438 was a 962kgs Simmental from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan and purchased by A&D Meats. A 796kgs British Blue from Messrs Jewitt, Gracies Farm, Romaldkirk sold at £2304 and was purchased by Bowland Foods Ltd, this bull was also top overall price per kilo at 289.5p. Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle sold second top at 287.5p for a 633kg Limousin cross, Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie followed closely behind at 279.5p for a 641kgs Limousin cross both purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Once again Black and Whites were dear with a day’s top of £1472 for 677kgs purchased by Bowland Foods, top price per kilo of 228.5p was paid to Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown, Carlisle and purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  More bulls are required on a weekly basis.   All enquiries please get in touch with our auctioneer Grant Anderson 07872 129274.

PRIME CATTLE

Slightly quieter on numbers with only 69 prime steers and heifers forward on the week seeing trade have the edge over last week with 20 selling over £1800 and 6 selling over £2000 to a day’s top of £2182 for a 767kgs Limousin cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton also sold a Limousin cross steer for £2073, 734kgs alongside Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie with another at £2059 purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Top pence per kilo steer at 284.5p was another Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake. British Blue crosses from Messrs Jarman, Brow Top, Workington sold to 278.5p purchased by Ralph Pearson. Top overall heifer was 745kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont peaking at £2074 and purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top overall pence per kilo of the day went to a 568kgs Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth purchased by John Penny, Leeds.

CAST COWS A smaller show of 300 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer with trade being very good throughout. Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains, Lanark sold the top price British Blue cow for 840kg at 264.5p totalling £2222 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Philip Hammond, Auchenbart Farm, Ayrshire sold the top priced Charolais cow for 950kg at 217.5p totalling £2066 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House’s run of cows topped at 851kg at 233.5p totalling £1987 for a Limousin x cow bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and 862kg at 217.5p totalling £1874 for a British Blue x to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Cowx & Son, Hudscales sold a Limousin cow for 828kg at 225.5p totalling £1867 and 630kg at 251.5p totalling £1584 bought by Owain Llyr and Morgan Helliwell. Taymar Herefords, Leyland sold a British Blue cow for 709kg at 262.5p totalling £1861 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Mattinson & Son, Burthwaite Farm sold a Limousin cow for 632kg at 235.5p totalling £1488 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Bradley & Son, Marina House sold the top priced Parthenaise cow for 681kg at 233.5p totalling £1590 to Owain Llyr.

Messrs Moscrop, Ryeclose sold the top priced dairy Shorthorn cow for 772kg at 202.5p totalling £1563 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Morley, Petteril Bank Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 897kg at 173.5p totalling £1556 to Les Fell. Messrs Ramsey, Glenalmer sold an Aberdeen Angus bull for 1071kg at 169.5p totalling £1815 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Uskstar Ltd sold a British Blue stock bull for 912kg at 187.5p totalling £1710 to Owain Llyr.

The champion lamb was the first prize continental cross from James Crichton, Egremont weighing 53kg he sold at £205 to Tony Harrison Butchers, Cockermouth. Reserve Champion was the first prize Suffolk cross lamb from Seymour Farms, it was sold at £190 to the judge. Leading price per kilo at 410ppk was Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston who averaged £187 for their lambs. An overall averaged of 312p, £145 per head saw a very pleasing return for all vendors.

HOGGS: 883 hoggs sold well once again with heavy hoggs in particular selling to a greater demand.  An SQQ avaerge of 277ppk these topped at £162 (x2) for Texel hoggs from Messrs Carruthers, Grassgarth, Welton with the sale average £125.
