Borderway Sale of Store Cattle & Weanlings

On Wednesday 4^th May Harrison & Hetherington had 1663  cattle forward at their weekly sale comprising of  669 Store Cattle, 438 store bulls and weanlings 389 calves and 167 Dairy cattle in the Borderway Monthly Dairy Day.

STORE CATTLE – Yet another fantastic entry of 669 strong store cattle forward at Borderways weekly sale, whereby quality was well down on the week but trade remains every bit as firm.  Topping the sale at £2040 was Messrs Johnston, Westray, Cockermouth with their Limousin cross steer.  Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth sold another to £1950.  Bazadaise to £1640 from Messrs Batey, High Knells , Carlisle.  British Blues crosses to £1590 from Messrs Rudd, Grassings, Wigton and £1555 for two from Messrs Irving, Thackmire, Wigton.  Aberdeen Angus to £1480 from Messrs Dart, Flothers, Hexham.

Heifers sold to £1745 for a Simmental cross from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth and £1660 for a British Blue cross from the same good home.  Limousin crosses from Messrs Holliday & Graham, Bolton Wood Lane, Wigton to £1640 and Seymour Farms,  Wigton to £1600 for another.

Black and whites steers sold to a days top of £1430 for two Holstein Friesians from Messrs Watson, Howrigg, Wigton and £1400 for another from the same home.

WEANED CALVES – A massive turnout of both cattle and buyers in ring 4 on Wednesday with a bumper entry of 451 forward. An abundance of grass meant all classes of cattle were well bid with and the ring was packed from start to finish. Top price of the day was achieved for 3 Limousin bulls from Messrs Evans, Halmyre Farm, Castle Douglas topping the day at £1315. The steers were topped by Messrs Langcake, Isle Old Park, Cockermouth selling a Charolais x bullock for £1100. Heifers topped at £1140 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus heifers from Messrs Thompson, Edenbanks, Cumwhitton. Ring 4 once again proves to be the place for grazing cattle with another impressive show expected next week.
