On Monday 9th May, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.
A much smaller show of 48 prime bulls forward seeing trade slip 10-15 pence on the week, despite this, five of the biggest still easily broke into the £2000 club to a day’s top of £2279.28 for an 865kg Limousin from Messrs Graham, Orchard House, Hawick, this was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith sold 840kgs to £2163 purchased by Les Fell. Blondes to £2180 for an 834kgs from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm, Penrith and Charolais to £2105.21 from Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan for 879kgs that was purchased by A & D Meats. Top overall pence per kilo at 273.50p was paid to Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie for 675kg Limousin purchased by Bowland Foods,
Dairy bred bulls saw a day’s top of £1305 for a 600kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle. Holstein Friesian topped at £1244.88 for 624kg from Messrs Hewitt, Cardewlees Farm, Carlisle, top pence per kilo at 219.5p was paid out to Seymour Farms, Wigton with their 558kg Montbeliarde

PRIME CATTLE Yet another fantastic entry of 84 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway weekly sale whereby all classes would align alongside last week’s easing trade throughout the country. Despite this five cattle sold to over £2000 to a days top of £2082.28 for a 745kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold a 715kg Limousin cross to £1984.13, top British Blue cross came from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle selling 683kg to £1861.18 and purchased by Eric Hall. Top overall pence per kilo of 303.5p was achieved twice and on both occasions by Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton for a 590kg and a 561 kg Limousin cross purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and Steven Wilsons Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.
Messrs Airey, The Close, Carlisle also sold one to 300ppk and again was purchased by Bowland Foods,
Steers peaked at £2058.12 for a 739kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well sold a further two at 733kgs and 860 kgs for £2029.13 and £2016.70 purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport sold a 737kg to £2000.96. Top pence per kilo of 279.5p was paid to Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton for a 690kg Limousin cross purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Once again, a great show of 325 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to an increased ringside of buyers which ensured all classes were in great demand. 166 beef cows and stock bulls sold to average 190.5p and 60 sold for 200p and above. JTC Excavations sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 839kg, 271.5p, £2277 bought by Owain, Llyr, Tyn Y Wern. Messrs Timm, West Farm, Pickering sold the top priced Charolais cow for 1017kg, 219.5ppk, £2237 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains, Lanark sold a British Blue cow for 893kg, 239.5pppk, £2138 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Chappelhow and Morley, 44 Clifton Hill Gardens sold a British blue cow for 878kg, 239.5p and £2102 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Bell, Hallbankgate Farm run of Charolais cows topped at 845kg, 234.5pppk, £1981 and 863kg, 214.5ppk, £1851 and 686kg, 231.5ppk, £1588 bought by Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Ridley, Woodhall’s run of cows topped at 685kg, 237.5ppk, £1626 and 675kg, 233.5ppk, £1576 bought by Owain Llyr and Jewitts. A plainer show of dairy cast cows on offer however trade was good throughout. Messrs Teasdale & Sons, Halefield Farm sold top priced Dairy Shorthorn cow for 808kg, 199.5ppk, £1611 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Little, Kirkbride house sold the top priced Holstein cow for 855kg, 183.5ppk, £1568, The top priced Montbeliarde cross cow from the same home sold for 755kg, 191.5ppk, £1445 both bought by Messrs Fell. Messrs Teasdale & sons, Harefield sold the top priced Friesian cross cow for 779kg, 189.5ppk, £1476 to Sean McGimpsey. PRIME SHEEP A smaller show overall which left purchasers short of requirements, this resulted in an exceptional trade for all classes. Spring lambs more than doubled in numbers on the week with the trade going upwards seeing some exceptional returns. 11 pens sold over 400ppk with over 20 pens over £160 per head. Lambs levelled at £143.24 to a top of £180 for a fabulous lamb from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston which sold to Steven Wilsons, Butchers, Corby Hill. Messrs Musgrave also sold 39 kgs lambs to £175 or 448.7p which sold to Bowland Foods Ltd.
Hoggs more than halved in numbers and were a fabulous trade throughout to average £129 a head to a top of £178 for Beltex hoggs from Messrs McCune, Farewell Grange, Wigton
