Borderway Primestock Sale

On Monday 16th May, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A much larger entry of 86 prime bulls forward at Borderway’s weekly sale whereby all classes would match last week’s reduced trade.  Topping the sale overall was a Simmental from Messrs Ward, West Mains, Lanark at £2472.42 and purchased by A & D Meats.  Limousins sold to £2180.13 from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning Farm, Keswick and Messrs Struthers, Collielaw, Lanarkshire to £2072.19 both purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick.  A 760 kgs Charolais from Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith to £1805 purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.  Top overall pence per kilo of 273.0p was paid to Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle purchased again by Ralph Persons, 

Black and white bulls peaked at £1488.69 for Holstein Friesian from Messrs Wilson, South View, Penrith.  Another from Messrs Story, Blackrigg, Longtown to £1385.84.  Top pence per kilo at 208.5p for the aforementioned bull from Messrs Wilson, South View.

PRIME CATTLE – Yet another good show of 72 prime steers and heifers forward with all best quality sorts very easily sold but plainer types harder to cash on the week.  Topping the sale overall was a 790kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie at £2097.45 and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle sold 744kgs to £1997.64 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo of 284.5p was achieved by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers.  Heifers were seen to top at £1994.45 for a 706kg Limousin from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Penrith purchased by Eric Hall.  Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold a 698kgs Limousin cross to £1929.97 purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Top British Blue x was 648kgs from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle sold to £1850 and purchased by Ralph Pearsons.  Top overall pence per kilo at 291.5p came from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, equalling this price was Messrs Sisson, Kelbarrow, Penrith both purchased by John Penny, Leeds.

CAST COWS Once again a great entry of 270 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with trade taking a lift again on the week. 141 beef cows sold to an average of 199.5p up 8.93p on the week. Messrs Smith, Fairview, Lanark sold a 12-year-old Limousin cow for 1006kg, 239.5ppk, £2409 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor’s run of 10 Limousin cows sold to an average of 811kg, 229ppk, £1858 and topped at 999kg, 219.5ppk, £2192 and 835kg, 259.5ppk, £2166 and 805kg, 261.5ppk, £2105 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Vance, Low Skeog sold three outstanding Charolais cows which topped at 984kg, 207.5ppk, £2041 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains, Lanark sold the top priced blue cow for 828kg, 239.5ppk, £1983 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hutchinson, Hollin Cross, Hexham sold a British Blue cross cow for 709kg, 239.5ppk, £1698 to Les Fell.  

129 dairy cast cows got a big lift on the week to average an amazing 166.5p rising 7.5p on the week. Bluestone Farming, Duns sold a Fleckveich cow for 1016kg, 187.5p, £1905 and 847kg, 207.5p, £1757 and 792kg, 201.5p, £1595 bought by Sean McGimpsey, Michael Helliwell and Charles Kirkpatrick and 713kg, 204ppk, £1458 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Graves, Old Town Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 698kg, 229.5ppk, £1601 to Eric Hall. Messrs Mattocks, Aulby Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow foe 813kg, 194.5ppk, £1581 to Messrs Fell, Brigholme Farm. Messrs Barrow and Sons, Helm Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 791kg, 195.5ppk, £1546 to Les Fell. Blencogo House Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 814kg, 187.5ppk, £1526 to Les Fell. Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End sold a Holstein x cow for 809kg, 187.5p, £1516 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

Messrs Dixon & Sons, Haresceugh Castle sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1087kg, 197.5p, £2146 to Owen Llyr. Messrs Brown & Co, Little Culmain Farm sold the top priced Simmental stock bull for 1025kg, 198.5ppk, £2034 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Smith, Fairview, Lanark sold the top priced Angus stock bull for 1135kg, 172ppk, £1957 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP

On Monday the 16th of May Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep which attracted a larger entry for all classes with trade for all types much firmer on the week. Spring lambs continue to grow in numbers and firms actively switching over to them is causing trade to rise. Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall continue to lead the sales this week selling to £190 for an exceptional single lamb purchased by Mulhollands Butchers, Great Orton. Another from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall lead the per kilo league at 440p (40kg, £172) selling to Yorkshire Halal Meats leaving a consistent average of £175.88, 416.27pph and 42.5kg.  All in the lambs averaged £145.93 per head.

A mixed array of hoggs were fantastic to sell and topped at £170 for a pen of 6 fantastic Beltex types from Messrs Timm, Monkfryston who also sold the leading hoggs per kilo at 359p to leave a consistent average of £151.35.

CAST SHEEP: On Monday 16th May Harrison and Hetherington held its weekly sale of cast sheep and rams in Borderway market. A larger entry was presented to the usual ringside of buyers with all classes keenly bid for and keeping well in line with the national trend. The sale topped at £192 for a pair of Lleyns from Low House Farm, Armathwaite.  Lowland ewes topped at £189 for a Texel cross from Messrs Lumsdon, Greengate. Hill ewes topped at £134 for a pen of Cheviot ewes from Messrs P Graham, Hillend, Canonbie.  Mules topped a £128 from Messrs JG Story, Stoneknowe, Newcastleton.  Swaledales topped at £105 for a pen of 6 from Messrs RG & LA Grieve, Whiteside. A lot more ewes could be sold to the vendor’s advantage.
