Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 1,837 sheep were forward consisting of 400 spring lambs, 1,025 prime hoggs and 412 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £218 and 463.8p/kg were a pair of 47kg Beltex cross lambs from Messrs Skelton, Low House, Maryport.

Also making £187 were 46kg Beltex cross lambs and 40kg lambs making £181 (452.5p/kg) all from Low House.

Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold a pen of 46kg Beltex lambs to make £181.

Messrs Lyle, Staingills, Penrith sold a pen of 37kg lambs to make £169 (456.8p/kg) with a pen of 10 Texel cross lambs weighing 39kg making £170 (435.9p/kg) and a pen of 23 39kg Texel cross lambs making £166.50 (426.9p/kg) all from Staingills.

Spring lambs were the dearest trade so far this season with an SQQ average of 371p/kg and an overall average of 370.1p/kg and £150.21 being achieved.

36 pens and 141 lambs sold between £160-£218.

38 pens and 167 lambs sold between 380-463p/kg

Prime hoggs topped at £181 for a heavy Texel hoggs from Messrs Raine, Stanhope Gate Farm, Barnard Castle.

Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall, Penrith sold a pen of Charollais hoggs to £169 with a pen of 14 Suffolk cross hoggs selling to £165 and another two pens of 19 and 21 Suffolk cross hoggs both making £158.50 from this home.

Hill cheviot hoggs topped at £145.50 for a pen of 10 58kg hoggs with another pen of 10 cheviot hoggs weighing 56kg making £144.50 Messrs Smithson, Bloan Farm, Brough Sowerby.

Mule hoggs topped at £135 for a pen of 8 from Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm, Penrith.

Blackfaced hoggs sold to £130 for a pen of 50kg hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown.

A pen of 21 44kg Blackfaced hoggs sold for £122.50 (278.4p/kg) also from Smalmstown.

Heavy hoggs were a lot dearer with Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall selling 100 hoggs to average £159.43.

Cast sheep topped at £186 for a pen of Texel cross ewes from Messrs Lyle, Staingills.

Swaledale ewes topped at £120 for a pen from Messrs Hutchinson, Dirt Pit Farm, Barnard Castle.

A fantastic overall cast ewe average of £121.31 was achieved with once again, buyers looking for all types of cast sheep which are all in demand here in the ring at Kirkby Stephen.
