On Monday 23rd May, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A smaller entry of only 69 prime bulls forward seeing trade starting to rise on the week. Four bulls sold into the £2000 club to a day overall top of £2474 for a 918kg Limousin from Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton Farm, Annan and purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Bell, Hill Top, Keswick sold an 827kg Limousin to £2245. Messrs Bowe, Midtown, Wigton also sold a Limousin to £2218 purchased by Ralph Pearsons and Messrs D A Harrison, Hill House, Wigton to £2048. Top overall pence per kilo of 274p was a 681kg Limousin cross from Messrs D A Harrison, Hill House purchased by Ralph Pearsons, Bradford. Charolais crosses were hitting 269.5p for a 580kg from Messrs Duff, The Laythes, Carlisle. Dairy breed bulls peaked at £1416 for a 717kg Holstein from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith and purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Wilson, South View, Penrith sold a 652kg Holstein Friesian to £1398 and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Messrs Wilson also sold top pence per kilo of 215.5p for a Holstein Friesian. PRIME CATTLE – A smaller entry of only 56 prime steers and heifers forward at the weekly sale, whereby like last week, best quality easily sold and plainer cattle no better. Five cattle sold over £2000 to a day’s top of £2117.56 for a British Blue cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and purchased by Eric Hall. Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Penrith sold a 746kg Limousin cross at £2070 which was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie also sold a Limousin cross for £2049 weighing 736kg and purchased by Eric Hall. Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle sold their best to £2042 for a 728kg Limousin cross. Top overall pence per kilo of 288.5p was paid to Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton for their British Blue cross steer. Messrs Story, Newbiggin sold a Limousin cross to 280.5p. Heifers saw a day’s top of £1924 for a 701kg Charolais cross from Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. A 690kg Limousin cross from Messrs, Wilson, Petteril Hill sold to £1914, Top pence per kilo of 284.5p was paid to Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith for a 599kg Limousin cross and purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. Matching this price was a 561kg Limousin cross from Messrs Story, Newbiggin and purchased by John Penny, Leeds, Messrs Blake, Halfway Well sold another to 281.5p and this heifer was purchased by R & J P Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle. CAST COWS A larger entry of 319 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with trade being good throughout. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold 3 outstanding cows for 693kg, 264.5ppk, £1832 and 803kg, 223.5ppk, £1792 and 705kg, 243.5ppk, £1716 all Limousin crosses bought by Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Robinson and Sons, Gelt Hall Farm sold the top priced Bazadaise cow for 809kg, 219.5ppk and £1775 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Teasdale, Halefield Farm sold the top priced British Blue cross cow for 881kg, 218.5ppk and £1772 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Robinson, Burtholme Farm sold a run of Holstein cross cows to top at 976kg, 188.5ppk, £1822 and 860kg, 187.5ppk, £1612 both purchased by Pickstocks. Messrs Teasdale and sons, Hallfield Farm sold the top priced Dairy Shorthorn cow for 867kg, 191.5ppk and £1660 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Rogerson & Sons, Wardparks Farm sold the top priced Fleckvieh cross cow for 890kg, 181.5ppk, £1615 to Bowes, Harbarrow Farm. Evening Hill Farm sold a Holstein cross cow 862kg, 184.5ppk, £1590 to Pickstocks. Connell Farm sold a Swedish Red heifer for 619kg, 209.5ppk, £1296 and a Fleckvieh cow for 747kg, 198.5ppk, £1482 bought by Alan Jarvis and Les Fell.

Messrs Harper, West House Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 1351kg, 169.5ppk, £2289 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Bell, Mossband Hall sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1183kg, 174.5ppk, £2064 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

PRIME SHEEP - A much improved show of 525 Spring lambs were forward this week with all classes meeting a keen enquiry, with best end, handy weights in particularly seeing some fantastic returns.  Nineteen pens of lambs sold from 400-439ppk with twenty-nine pens £160-£186 per head.  Leading the way at £186 was a 43 kg Beltex lamb from Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head which sold to Bowland Foods Ltd.  Charlotte Wilson, Evening Hill Farm, and Olivia Gridley, Seymour Farms, Wigton both sold 41 kgs lambs at £180 or a sale topping 439ppk selling to Yorkshire Halal and Bowland Foods respectively.  All in the lambs levelled at £143.23.

CAST SHEEP: A similar entry was presented with a plainer show of ewes being forward.  Topping the sale was a Texel Ram from GR Morton, Church Farm, Penrith selling to £172.  Ewes topped at £155 from Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft for Texel cross ewes.  A plainer show of mules was met with an excellent trade with many pens of lean ewes selling to £120.  Mules topped at £126 from EPM Lawson, High Boonwood, Seascale.  Hill ewes topped at £88 from G & M Foster, Coombe Cragg for a pair of swaledales.  Herdwicks sold to £98 for a pen from JR Lyall, North Scales, Carlisle.  An ever-increasing ring side of buyers are presented for ewes with strong outlets for all classes.
