Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 30th May, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A smaller show of 56 Prime bulls forward which was quieter on the week.  Trade was once again sharper with four bulls exceeding £2000 to a day’s overall top of £2375 for an 804kg Limousin from Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle.  Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick sold 823kg Limousin to £2316.75.  Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie sold best priced Simmental to £1825.20 for 720kg.  Top overall pence per kilo of 295p and 281.5p was paid to Little Orton Farm, for their Pure bred Limousins.  Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1417 for a Holstein Friesian weighing 683kg and finally top pence per kilo of 207.5p was achieved twice, firstly for the aforementioned Holstein Friesian from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths and secondly for Messrs White, Steel Hall, Hexham.  Trade is expected to be good again for next Monday’s sale please advise entries.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller entry of 62 Prime steers and heifers forward seeing an outstanding trade for all classes forward.  Topping the trade overall was a 778kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle peaking at £2166.73 and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Cape, Kirkland Guard, Wigton sold 798kgs to £2102.73 again to Eric Hall.  British Blues peaked at £2053.10 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle for 759kgs.  Top pence per kilo steer was 294.0p from Messrs Sisson, Fenton Farm, Brampton.  Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle achieved 293.5p for 687kgs both purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.

Heifers sold to a top of £2078.44 for a 728kg British Blue Cross from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  713kg Charolais from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont to £1992.84 and 679kg Limousins to £1931.76 from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle.  Top overall pence per kilo of £3.00 came from Messrs Pearson, High Plasketlands, Maryport for a 636kg British Blue cross and was purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.  A further two achieved 297.5p, one was a 598kg Limousin cross again from Plasket Lands Farm and secondly for a 595kg Limousin from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory purchased by Ralph Pearson and A & D Meats.  Next Monday Jubilee Primestock Show for Bullocks, Heifers and bulls commencing at 9.30 am.  Please advise entries by calling or text with our auctioneer Grant Anderson 07872 129274.

CAST COWS Once again a great entry of 279 Cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with a terrific trade for all classes.

Messrs Oxley & Co, Barholm Mains sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 969kg, 257.5p £2495 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Mr Neil Forrester, Down By Rigg also an outstanding British Blue cow for 858kg 255.5p £2192 again purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Jefferson, Aspatria Hall run of cows topped at 832kg 248.5p, £2067 for a Limousin x bought by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm, sold the top priced Limousin cow for 906kg 225.5p £2043 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Dixon & Chappelhow, West Field House sold a Limousin cow for 789kg, 219.5 £1731 to Messrs Roberts.  Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hall, sold the top priced Simmental cow for 811kg, 203.5 £1650 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head sold the top priced Hereford cow for 794kg 206.5 £1639 to Michael Helliwell.  Messrs Watson, Cunningarth sold a young Limousin cow for 643kg, 249.5 £1604 to Sean McGimpsey.  Messrs Long, Keyla Park sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 883kg 179.5 £1584 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

A mixed show of Dairy cast cows was on offer with trade being sharper than last weeks flying trade.  Messrs Davidson, Muirhouse sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 935kg, 179.5p £1678 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Bromfield Farms Holstein x cows topped at 866kg 183.5p £1589 bought by Pickstocks.  Messrs Rudd & Sons, Grassing Farm, Holstein x cows topped at 846kg 184.5 £1560 to Les Fell.

Messrs Wadsworth & Son, Big Balcraig Farm, run of Holstein x cows topped at 854kg, 176.5 £1507 to Les Fell.  Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths sold a Holstein x cow for 813kg, 184.5p £1499 also to Les Fell.

Messrs Rome, Fauldie sold Friesian heifers for 222.5p bought by Jewitts.  Messrs Maxwell, North Doddington Wooler run of cows topped at 213.5p, 208.5p 204.5p 199.5p all for Swedish Red heifers bought by Capper Farming, Les Fell and Alan Jarvies x 2.  Messrs Paul & Son, Greigsland sold a Holstein heifer for 199.5p to Capper Farming.  Blencogo House Farms Holstein x heifers for 199.5p to Les Fell.

CAST BULLS: Eleven Stock bulls were on offer which topped at 1215kg, 173.5p £2108 for an Angus bull from Messrs Blamire, Park House Farms bought by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Low Drumrae Farming Co sold the top priced Simmental stock bull for 1071kg, 185.5p £1986 to Pickstocks.  Maxwell Farming Co sold an Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 1133kg 168.5p £1909 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Jackson & Son, Lingstubbs Farm sold the top priced Friesian Stock bull for 1104kg 165.5p £1227 to Pickstocks.

PRIME SHEEP – Prime Lambs numbers again rose on the week with more first draws coming forward along with several new vendors impressed with prices obtained so far this season.  An overall average of £147.75 per head was achieved which is a rise of over £4.52 per head on the week.  The 40kg first cross mule lambs would see the largest rise on the week with weight flying too.  Leading the trade at £188 for heavy Texel lambs from Messrs Hetherington, Blue Dial, Maryport selling to Paisleys Butchers, Wigton.  Messrs Hetherington sold lambs to average £172.80.  Top per kilo was 444.4p (40.5kg £180) from Messrs Fell, Harley Croft, Wigton to Vivers, Scotlamb.  Messrs Fell sold 21 lambs to weigh 41.12kg, 422.81 ppk and £173.86 per head.

23 lots sold in excess of £170 with 50 over £160 with 72 over £150.  Suffolk lambs sold to £171 from Messrs Oliver, Whitehouse, Matfen, followed by new vendor Messrs White, Steel Hill, Hexham at £170 with two heavy lambs from Jake Lundy, Annan matching this price.

CAST SHEEP: On Monday 30th May Harrison and Hetherington held its weekly sale of cast sheep at Borderway.  A small entry was presented which saw a simply outstanding trade. An average of £134.47 was achieved with many sheep leaps ahead of other centres. Topping the sale was a Texel cross ewe from Messrs Mallinson, The Hill selling to £186. Mules topped at £128 from Messrs Lowery, Stone Hill.  Hill sheep topped at £102 from GR Adkin & Son, Thornhill.  Rams topped at £178 for a Texel ram from the same home. Reminder next Monday is our Jubilee show and sale where there will be classes for Lowland and Hill ewes.
