Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Anniversary Show & Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 2,665 sheep were forward consisting of 1,062 spring lambs, 1,041 prime hoggs and 562 cast sheep.

Topping the lambs at £208 were the Reserve Champion pair of lambs a pair of 50kg Texel cross lambs from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside which was bought by James Birkbeck on behalf of Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

Topping the lambs at 500p/kg was a 40kg Beltex cross lamb which made £200 from Messrs Lyle, Staingills, Penrith.

Our annual Anniversary Show which was combined with the Queens Jubilee show was held which was kindly sponsored by the NFU Mutual, Appleby and with judging being carried out by Lee Reade of Field Fresh Trading.

The overall championship was awarded to the first placed pair of Beltex cross lambs which weighed 46kg and sold for £205 (445.7p/kg) consigned by Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside and which were successfully purchased by the Judge for Field Fresh Trading.

Another overall sale average of 351.45p/kg and £144.67 was achieved.

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm sold a pair of 48kg Dutch Texel CROSS LAMBS WHICH SOLD FOR £186 SELLING TO Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Carlisle sold a pair of 44kg Beltex cross lambs to make £181.

Messrs Ewin, Black Syke, Sandford sold a pair od 45kg Beltex cross lambs to make £180.

Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold a pair of 42kg Texel cross lambs making £180.

Suffolk cross lambs topped at £174 for a pair of 50kg lambs from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Far,

30 pens and 128 lambs sold between 400-500p/kg

49 pens and 161 lambs sold between £160-£208

Prime hoggs sold to £184 for three separate pens of 71 and 64kg Texel cross hoggs with their teeth up from Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall Farm.

The whole consignment of 112 Suffolk and Texel cross hoggs from this home sold to average £162.76.

Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill Farm, Workington sold 61kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £180.

Messrs Slater, Whitley Hey Farm, Macclesfield sold a pen of six Beltex cross hoggs to make £179 with another pen of eleven 62kg hoggs making £170, the consignment of 35 hoggs averaged £168 from Whitley Hey.

Hill cheviot hoggs topped at £152.50 and 299p/kg for a pen of 22 51kg hoggs from Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm, York.

Suffolk cross hoggs sold to £175 from Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall Farm.

Messrs Bowling, York sold a pen of 23 48kg Suffolk cross hoggs to make £145 (302.1p/kg).

Swaledale hoggs sold to £128.50 for a pen of 10 53kg hoggs with their teeth up from Messrs Dawson, York.

Cast sheep were said to be one of the dearest trades ever seen!!

Topping at £215 were Texel cross ewes from Messrs Chippendale, Wharton Hall, Kirkby Stephen.

Hill cheviot ewes topped at £160.50 from Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm, Penrith.

Mule ewes sold to £152.50 for a pen of 10 from Messrs Walton, Rockcliffe Farm, Darlington.

Swaledale ewes broke new records topping at £138 for a pair of ewes from Messrs Akrigg, Manor House Farm, Skipton.

Messrs Allinson, West Briscoe, Barnard Castle also sold Swaledale ewes to £130.

Swaledale cast rams topped at £152.50 for a pair from Messrs Akrigg, Skipton.

A fantastic overall sale average of £130.15 for 562 ewes was achieved with this including over 200 horned ewes!

Many more ewes of all classes are required to meet extreme demand here at Kirkby Stephen on a weekly basis!!
