Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 6th June 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A good entry of 76 Prime bulls forward seeing a very buoyant trade especially for the plainest cattle.  Top overall bull came from Messrs Scott, Dalton Hook, Lockerbie selling their Limousin weighing 1038kg achieving £2486.01 to Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold second best at £2362 for 883kg.  Top overall pence per kilo of 289.5p was paid to Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna and purchased by Fraser Butchers, Stranraer.

Black and white bulls sold to the best trade of the day with a day’s top of £1625 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Murray & Son, Conheath, Dumfries who’s run of 9 Holsteins averaged 724kg, £1522.20.  Others to £1559 from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith.  Top pence per kilo of 231.5p was paid to Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and matching this same price was Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie for another Friesian.  All enquiries please get in touch with our auctioneer Grant Anderson 07872 129274.

PRIME CATTLE

A good entry of 68 prime steers and heifers forward seeing trade ever so slightly easier on the week.  Despite this Charolais crosses sold to the days top overall price of £2161.17 for an 814kgs Simmental cross steer from Messrs Harrington, Hoskett Hill, Carlisle.  Charolais peaked at £2114 from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Limousin’s sold to £2109 for 739kgs from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie and British Blue to £2043 for 739kgs from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle both of which were purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers Bradford.  Top pence per kilo steer was a 614kg Limousin cross from DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton attaining 286.50 and purchased by John Penny, Leeds, Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown to 285.5 and purchased by Ralph Pearson

Heifers saw a days top of £1988.03 for 682kgs from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill.  Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg sold 628kg to £1880 again purchased by Steven Wilson and Messrs Neill, Upper Nisbet Farm, Jedburgh sold their first prized 637kg Limousin cross to £1869 to Ralph Pearson.

Two heifers sold to 299.5 firstly by Messrs Critchton, Loughrigg and secondly by Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton purchased by John Penny, Leeds

PRIME SHEEP – A Special Platinum Jubilee Show was held this week and was kindly judged by local butcher, Steven Wilson, Corby Hill.  His Champion lamb was the 1st Prize Continental x lamb consigned by Messrs Grindley, Seymour Farms, Wigton.  This exceptional Beltex lamb topped the sale at £280 or 583.3p selling to Messrs Griffiths, Ellesmere.  In Reserve was the 2nd prize lamb from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall.

Outwith the Show the largest show of lambs this season so far sold to fantastic demand seeing a larger rise in the overall average to level at 345 ppk for all weights and grades.  Best end export types continue to fly with 37 pens sold over 400 pph with returns per head seeing 75 pens sell from £160-£280.  Leading consignments this week were Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont selling 7 to average £178 or 411.22 per kilo and Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston selling 16 to average £177.63 or 409.51 kilo.

CAST SHEEP: Harrison & Hetherington held its Jubilee Show and sale of cast sheep in Borderway Market.  A truly wonderful trade was had which saw a large show to average £143. 

The Pre Sale show was Judged by local man Martin Barker who awarded the Champion pen to W L Musgrave, Cardew Hall who later went on to sell his pen of five to £210.  However, topping the sale was a fantastic single Texel from J Irving, Luce Mains, Lockerbie selling for £224.  Mule ewes met with a massive increase which saw top price coming from Low House Farm, Armathwaite and from Castletown Estates selling for £140.  Suffolks topped at £188 from Steven Hodgson, Penrith.  Rams were serious trade with top price for a Texel selling for £210 from Mr G Anderson, Leafield Farm.   A lot more ewes could be sold in Borderway with an ever growing ringside of buyers looking for all classes of cast ewes and Rams.
