Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 2,671 sheep were presented consisting of 1,127 prime lambs, 792 prime hoggs and 752 cast sheep. 

Topping the spring lambs at £198 were a pair of 46 kilo Dutch Texel cross lambs from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm which were bought by Dowdings Butchers, Appleby. 

Topping at 505.3p per kilo was a 38 kilo Beltex cross lamb which sold for £192 from Messrs Lyle, Staingils, Penrith. 

Messrs Davies, Goddesby, Leicester sold a pen of three 39 kilo Beltex cross lambs to make £190 (487.2p per kilo) with a pen of three 38 kilo lambs making £179 (471.1p per kilo also from this home.  Messrs Pickard, Quaniborough, Leicester sold a pen of 40 kilo Beltex cross lambs to make £190 (475p per kilo).  Another pen of six 39 kilo Beltex cross lambs sold for £185 (474.4p per kilo). 

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm sold a pen of five 45 kilo lambs to make £189.  The consignment of 20 lambs from this home sold to average 45.9p per kilo £179.79 (391.2p per kilo).

Messrs Davies, Leicester sold their run of 24 lambs to average 40.3p per kilo, £176.54 (437.2p per kilo). 

Messrs Pickard, Leicester sold their consignment of 103 lambs to average 40.5p per kilo, £163.54 and 402.9p per kilo. 

Another fantastic overall sale average of 353.62p per kilo and £145.98 was achieved. 

40 pens and 165 lambs sold between £160 - £198. 

23 pens and 122 lambs sold between 400-505p per kilo. 

Prime hoggs topped at £188 for a 63 kilo Beltex cross hogg from Messrs Boustead, High Lane, Newbiggin on Lune. 

Texel cross hoggs topped at £183 for a pen of 63 kilo hoggs from Messrs Bousfield, Barrowmoor Road, Appleby. 

A pen of eleven 74 kilo Charollais cross hoggs sold to make £178 with another pen of thirteen Charollais cross hoggs making £175 and a pen of seven Suffolk cross hoggs making £175 all from Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall Farm, Penrith. 

Hill Cheviot hoggs sold to £164 for a pen of six 59 kilo hoggs from Messrs Smithson, Bloan Farm, Brough Sowerby. 

Hoggs also topped at 327.7p per kilo for a pen of 42 kilo hoggs making £154 from Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm, York. 

Messrs Downie, Newton Farm, Aberdeenshire sold a pen of thirty one 41 kilo Hill Cheviot hoggs making £124.50 (303.7p per kilo). 

Mule hoggs sold to £151 from Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hills Farm, Workington. 

Blackfaced hoggs sold to £140 for a pen of nine 52 kilo hoggs from Messrs Downie, Aberdeenshire. 

All classes of hoggs were a strong trade with plenty of these required over the next weeks on the run up to Qurbani. 

Cast sheep topped at £323.50 for a cast Texel ram from Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall Farm, Penrith. 

Cast ewes topped at £210 for a Texel cross from Messrs Lyle, Staingills, Penrith. 

Hill Cheviot ewes topped at £176.50 from Messrs Barker, Middle Bank End, Appleby. 

Mule ewes topped at £158 for a pen from Messrs Parmley, Middleton in Teesdale. 

Messrs Walton, Rockliffe Farm, Darlington sold a pen of twelve Mule ewes to make £150. 

Swaledale ewes topped at £126 for a pair from Messrs Harrison, High Beck Head, Middleton in Teesdale.
