Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 2,753 sheep were forward consisting of 1,005 spring lambs, 996 prime hoggs and 752 cast sheep. 

Topping the sale at £180 was a 46kg Beltex cross lamb from Messrs Thompson, Newfield Farm, Sedbergh.

Topping at 410.3p/kg were a pair of 39kg Beltex cross lambs which sold for £160 from Messrs Armstrong, Moor Riggs, Penrith.

Also selling for £176 were 47kg Dutch Texel cross lambs from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside.

Susan Sowerby, Terrys Farm also sold a pair of 46kg Dutch Texel cross lambs to make £171.

Messrs Thompson, Newfield sold 42kg Beltex cross lambs to make £170 (404.8p/kg)

Messrs Ewin, Black Syke, Sandford sold a pen of six 39kg lambs to make £155.

Suffolk cross lambs sold to £170 from Messrs Brannen, Scar Top, Penrith.

An overall sale average of 323.3p/kg was achieved which was a stronger trade than most on the week so far.

45 pens and 119 lambs sold between £150-£180.

Prime hoggs topped at £180 for a pen of nine 59kg Texel cross hoggs from Messrs Downie Farming Company, Aberdeenshire.

This same home topped at 372.3p/kg for a pen of eight 47kg Texel cross hoggs which sold for £175.

Messrs Kennedy, Roman Vale, Long Marton sold a pen of six Texel cross hoggs to make £176.

Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm, York sold a pen of 24 47kg hill cheviot hoggs to make £140 (297.9p/kg) with another pen of 33 hill cheviot hoggs from this home weighing 47kg making £137 (291.5p/kg).

Cast sheep were another flying trade!

Topping at £245 were a pair of Beltex cross ewes from Messrs Chester, Grassgill Lodge, Soulby.

Texel cross ewes also sold to £240 on two separate occasions, firstly for a pair of ewes from Messrs Brannen, Scar Top, Penrith, with another pen of Texel cross ewes also making £240 from Messrs Lyle, Staingills, Penrith.

Suffolk cross ewes sold to £192 for a pair from Messrs Brannen, Scar Top.

Mule ewes sold to £155 from Messrs Weighell, Fox Grove Farm, Richmond.

Swaledale ewes sold to a top of £120 for a pen from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill Farm, Workington.

All classes of ewes and rams were good to sell, and many more numbers are needed to meet the strong demand over the next few weeks!
