Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 20th June 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – Another good entry of 85 Prime bulls forward at Borderway Primestock sale whereby all classes would follow the national trend and ease ever so slightly on the week. Topping the sale overall was an outstanding 886kg Limousin from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning Farm, Keswick achieving £2325.21 selling to Bowland Foods, Preston; another sold to £2227.55 for 930kg from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith and Messrs Mason, Bank Farm, Penrith sold an 820kg British Blue cross to £2013.10. Top overall pence per kilo of 268.5p was paid to Setmabanning Farm, for the aforementioned Limousin. Dairy bred bulls were seen to peak at £1604 for a Fleckvieh from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and Friesians to £1405.38 from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie. Messrs Clark also sold top pence per kilo of 213.5p for Friesians and Fleckviehs to 216.5p for the aforementioned.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller entry of only 52 Prime steers and heifers forward seeing all classes slightly sharper on the week. A day’s top of £2023.58 was paid to Messrs Cape, Kirkland Guards, Wigton for one of their 724kg Limousin cross steers purchased by Mr Andrew Graham. Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport sold 691kg to £1938.26 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Charolais topped at £1849.97 from Messrs McKelvey, Burnside, Lochmaben, for 689kgs. Top pence per kilo steer and joint overall was 280.5ppk for another Limousin cross of Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close.

Heifers peaked at £2022.98 from DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton selling their 729kg Limousin cross purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo of 280.5p was also paid to DA Harrison for a 625kg Limousin cross purchased by Mr Andrew Graham. More cattle are required weekly as numbers look to tighten right up for the summer months.

CAST COWS & STOCK BULLS – Once again a large entry of 320 cast cows was on offer with 20% selling for over 200ppk.

BEEF CAST COWS – Messrs Priestly, Cracrop sold the top priced Limousin cow for 788kg, 239.5p, £1887 and 650kg, 235.5p, £1530 to Owain Llyr and Jewitt Meats. Bridgehouse Farming run of outstanding cows topped at 791kg, 234.5p, £1854; 576kg, 254.5p, £1465 and 619kg, 245.5p, £1519 purchased by Owain Llyr (2) and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hall & Sons, Horsleyhill Farm Cottage, Hawick sold a Limousin cross cow for 803kg, 227.5p, £1826 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Graham, Cumdivock sold an Aberdeen Angus cow for 782kg, 227.5p, £1779 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Robson & Sons, Merryshields sold the top priced British Blue cross cow for 785kg, 212.5p, £1668 to Messrs Roberts.

DAIRY CAST COWS – A large number of dairy cows was forward with all classes being in great demand. Messrs Graham, Middle Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow for 736kg, 209.5p, £1541 and 610kg, 219.5p, £1338 to Charles Kirkpatrick and Jewitt Meats. Messrs Eilbeck & Son, Plumbland sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 825kg, 186.5p, £1538 to Les Fell. Messrs Millar & Son, Woodhousehill sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 809kg, 183.5p, £1484 to Pickstocks. Messrs Magnay, Greenwrae sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 793kg, 183.5p, £1455 so Sean McGimpsey. PRIME SHEEP – A larger show of prime and cast sheep forward this week did nothing to dampen trade with all classes seeing a rise on the week to level at 325ppk for all weights and grades, this translates to £137.16 per head which is £22.41 up on last years corresponding Monday. Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston led the way this week with a fabulous Beltex cross lamb which weighed 41kg and sold for 500ppk or £205 a head. 23 pens sold over 390ppk with 37 pens selling over £160.

CAST SHEEP: A much larger entry of cast ewes were forward at Borderway with a sharper trade to go with it. The run of 406 cast sheep went on to average a very respectable £140.15 with a top price of £228 for a tremendous Texel ewe from Messrs Smith, Roachburn Farm, Tindale Fell; Messrs Mulholland, Great Orton also took advantage of the buoyant ewe trade resulting in their Beltex ewe selling for £214. Messrs Smith, Roachburn also took the top spot for hill bred with a pen of 3 Swaledale ewes selling for £104.
