On Monday 11th July 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.
PRIME BULLS – A good entry of 79 prime bulls were forward , seeing plainer bulls harder to sell on the week and better fleshed, shaped bulls slightly better on the week.
Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Proctor, Swarland Old Hall, Morpeth achieving £2117.18 purchased by Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. Charolais crosses sold to £1994.45 from Messrs Goldie, South Bower Houses, Dumfries purchased by A & D Meats.
Top overall pence per kilo of 272.5ppk was paid to Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith, purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.
Black & Whites were less money on the week but managed to respectively top at £1458.75 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Armour, Milton Farm, Moffat purchased by Messrs Helliwell, Rochdale.
Top pence per kilo of 218.5ppk for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Wilson, Street Head Carlisle was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.
Traditionals peaked at £1615.81 for a pure bred Belted Galloway.

PRIME CATTLE – A much smaller show of 43 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling dearer on the week. Six steers sold over £2000 to a day’s top of £2203.29 from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House for a Limousin purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Lawson’s run of 8 steers averaged a staggering £2031.23. The next best came from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie achieving £2152.86, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Also joining the £2000 club this week, for the first time ever was notable farmer Messrs Robson, Merryshields, Newcastle achieving £2075.51 and this was purchased again by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Robson also sold the top priced British Blue cross steer to £1987.38 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods.
Top overall steer pence per kilo was another from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, peaking at 292.5ppk.
Heifers were in very short supply and many more are required weekly. Topping the sale was Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands, Maryport selling to £1737.55 for 590kg and £1737.49 for 586kg both purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill. These two heifers also achieved the top overall pence per kilo of 296.5ppk and 294.5ppk.

CAST COWS & STOCK BULLS – A smaller show of 191 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer, with trade going up again to average 207.5ppk up 17p on the week.
BEEF CAST COWS – Messrs Graham, Cumdivock Farm sold the top priced Limousin cross for 907kg, 239.5ppk or £2172 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Goldie, South Bower Houses run of Charolais cows topped at 1067kg, 203.5ppk or £2171 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm run of outstanding cows topped at 824kg, 262.5ppk or £2170 for a British Blue cross and 793kg, 249.5ppk or £1978 and 763kg or 254.5ppk or £1941 for a Limousin cross purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr.
Mr Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall run of cows topped at 792kg, 269.5ppk or £2134 for a British Blue cross and to 771kg, 251.5ppk or £1939 and to 755kg, 254.5ppk or £1921 for Limousin crosses to Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm sold a British Blue cow for 764kg, 258.5ppk or £1074 to Owain Llyr.
DAIRY CAST COWS – A great trade for all classes of Dairy cast cows were forward with trade being up on the week to average 158.5ppk being up 4-5p on the week. Messrs Farish, East Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 975kg, 184.5ppk of £1798 and to 990kg, 177.5ppk or £1757 and 934kg, 178.5ppk or £1667 purchased by Messrs Roberts and Charles Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Henderson & Son, Park House Farm Holstein cows topped at 865kg, 192.5ppk or £1665 purchased by Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Rudd & Sons, Grassing Farm sold a Holstein cross cows for 847kg, 194.5ppk or £1647 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Moore, Brayshaw run of cows topped at 801kg, 203.5ppk for a Montbeliarde cross cow purchased by Messrs Roberts. Messrs Beard, Dormansteads Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 841kg, 192.5ppk or £1618 to Les Fell.
Messrs Messenger, The Howes sold a Norwegian Red heifer for 605kg, 214.5ppk or £1297 to Les Fell. Messrs Moffat & Co, Kirtlebank Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross heifer for 681kg, 211.5ppk or £1440 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Carruthers Glenzierfoot Farm sold a Fleckvieh cow for 717kg, 207.5ppk or £1487 to Michael Helliwell.

PRIME SHEEP – Hot weather decreased numbers this week with half the numbers of last week. This served the trade somewhat, with Borderway averaging 307ppk, some 15-20p ahead of other outlets. Please take advantage of this level of trade which is available for all types.
Heavy lambs sold to £170 for 55kg Texels from Jim Reid, Bengal, Lockerbie selling to Mr Eric Hall.
Top pence per kilo was 402.4ppk for 41kg Dutch Texel lambs from Messrs Urwin, Hill House, Kirklinton, selling to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston.

CAST EWES – A larger yet plainer show of cast ewes and rams were forward, whereby leaner sorts were easier to cash. Borderway stands firm in holding the trade to set the bar high for other local markets.
Topping the sale was a Texel ewe from TP Wigham, Hargill House selling to £180. A good offering of Mules resulted in a top of £110 from Messrs Storey, Scarrowhill. Hill sheep topped at £112 for some Cheviots from T Chalmers & Co, Canonbie. Suffolks to £120 from TW & JL Lowthian, Zetlands.
