Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 18th July 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A good show of 85 prime bulls forward at Borderway’s weekly sale whereby a good trade was seen throughout with a day’s top of £2305 paid to Paul Stobart, The Square, Carlisle with a 924kg Charolais purchased by A & D Meats. A 950kg Charolais from Messrs Johnston, West Wharmley, Hexham sold to £2284. British Blues sold to £2107 for 825kg from Messrs Brannen, Scar Top, Penrith. Simmentals sold to £2047 for 848kgs from Messrs Lowry, New Steadings, Lanark. Top price per kilo of 267.5p was paid to Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae, Dumfries for a 624kg Limousin Purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Dairy bred bulls saw a new record in Borderway for a 757kg Friesian from Messrs Hewitson, King Hill, Brampton achieving a whopping £1722 purchased by A & D Meats. Holstein Friesians from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown to £1633 and purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Fleckviehs sold to £1504 for a 695kg from Messrs Rothery, Old Papes, Wigton. Top overall pence per kilo of 227.5p was paid to the aforementioned Friesian from Messrs Hewitson. Messrs Reed, Croft House, Carlisle sold second best to 222.5p for a 548KG Friesian purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE –A much larger entry of 75 prime steers and heifers forward selling to a fantastic trade throughout the sale. Eleven steers and heifer sold in excess of £2000 with 19 selling over £1900 to a day’s top of £2314 for a 834kg British Blue cross steer from Ross Brothers, Wardhead, Aberdeenshire purchased by Eric Hall. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold another two fantastic Limousin cross steers to £2228 and £2228 for 812kg and 809kg purchased by Mr Eric Hall and Charles Kirkpatrick. Charolais crosses sold to £2084 for 785kg from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie. A 750kg Salers cross from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie peaked at £1938. Top price per kilo steer came from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle selling at 691kg Limousin cross to 283.5p purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Ross Bros, Aberdeen sold a 717kg Limousin cross steer to 279.5p and purchased by John Penny, Leeds. In the heifers a day’d top of £2156 was paid to Ross Bros, Aberdeen again with a 777kg Limousin cross. The same vendors sold a 752kg Aberdeen Angus to £2064. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold second best priced Limousin cross to £2047 for a 738kg heifer purchased by Eric Hall. Charolais sold to £1956 from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw. Top overall pence per kilo of 301.5p was paid to Messrs Story, Newbiggin selling their 635kg Limousin cross to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

CAST COWS & STOCK BULLS – An increased number of 242 cast cow and stock bulls was on offer with trade being similar

BEEF CAST COWS – M/s Oliver, Cawfields run of cows topped at 854kg at 243.5p totalling £2079 and 713kg at 234.5p totalling £1671 for Blue x cows bought by Owain Llyr and Sean McGimpsey. M/s Cowx & Son, Hudscales sold two Limousin cows for 799kg at 230.5p totalling £1756 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Jewitt Meats. M/s Nisbet, Sorn Mains sold the top priced Charolais cow for 731kg at 235.5p totalling £1721 to Owain Llyr. M/s Illingworth, Howgillside sold a limousin cow 691kg 248.5p £1717 to Owain Llyr. M/s Eve, Stubbsgill Farm sold a Limousin cow for 601kg at 245.5p totalling £1475 to Les Fell. Maxwell Farming Company topped the Aberdeen Angus cows at 837kg at 200.5p totalling £1678 to M/s Roberts. Gerrard House Farms topped the Simmental cows at 819kg at 198.5p totalling £1625 to Sean McGimpsey. M/s Fell, Stranger Hill sold a Blue cow for 602kg at 235.5p totalling £1417 to M/s Helliwell

DAIRY CAST COWS – A mixed show of dairy cast cows was on offer, Bluestone Farming’s run of Fleckvieh cows topped at 857kg at 186.5p totalling £1598 and 851kg at 183.5p totalling £1561 and 820kg at 187.5p totalling £1537 bought by M/s Roberts and Michael Helliwell. M/s Bendle & Sons, The Nook sold the top priced Friesian cow for 883kg at 180.5p totalling £1593 to Les Fell. M/s Hewitson, King Hill sold a Friesian cow for 758kg at 207.5p totalling £1572 and 804kg at 192.5p totalling £1547 both bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Vevers, High Plains sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 872kg at 175.5p totalling £1530 to Les Fell. M/s Rogerson & Son, Ward Park sold Friesian heifer for 599kg at 211.5p totalling £1266 to Capper Farming. M/s Peile Parkgate Hall sold a Friesian Heifer for 650kg at 207.5p totalling £1348 to David Holmes. M/s Morley, Hadderdale sold a Holstein x heifer for 703kg at 204.5p totalling £1437 to David Holmes. PRIME SHEEP – On Monsay 18th July 2022 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep which saw 2524 head forward. The biggest show of spring lambs this year saw 2201 lambs sell to average 296ppkg thus showing numbers are not a problem to place in Borderway with our average again leading the way nationally today. Topping the sale at £175 was a fabulous Texel cross lamb for M/s Scott, Hayton Brow, Aspatria which sold to local Butcher Steven Wilson, Corby Hill, who was one of three local Butchers operating today. M/s Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston once again lead the way per kilo selling lambs to 390.9ppkg (44kg £172) which sold to Yorkshire Halal Ltd.

CAST EWES – On Monday 18th July 2022 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of cast sheep in Borderway. A larger show of 325 head were forward with a sale average of £107 being achieved. Topping the sale were a pen of Texel ewes from M/s TP Wigham, Hargill House which sold for £167. Rams topped at £132 for Texels from TA&C Foster, Ryehill, Suffolks topped at £140 from M/s Dent, Beamwham,Hexham and M/s Watson, Oakbank with Mules to £126 from M/s Scott, Hayton Brow, Wigton. Lloyd Fowlie, Alford sold a fantactic run of Blackfaced ewes selling to a top of £118 with the run of 190 averaging £103, more and more vendors are seeing the advantages of selling their cast sheep at Borderway with more travelled ewes being presented from different ends of the Country.
