Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 25th July 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A good entry of 87 prime bulls forward seeing quality less on the week despite this, a good trade seen throughout with far less weight on offer.  A day’s top of £2094.80 was paid to Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth for a 789kg Limousin cross this was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Falder, Croft House, Cockermouth sold 770kg Limousin to £2012.55.  Beef Shorthorn to £1793.86 from Messrs Frame, Little Gala, Biggar purchased by A & D Meats.  Simmentals to £1757.55 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Halifax.   Top pence per kilo overall was a 574kg Limousin from Messrs Little, The Guards, Ireby achieved 278.5ppk and purchased by Bowland Foods.  Dairy bred bulls sold to a top of £1556.26 for a Holstein Friesian weighing 709 kgs from Messrs Graves, Old Town, Carlisle.  This same animal also achieved top pence per kilo of 219.5p.

PRIME CATTLE – A much smaller entry of only 56 prime steers and heifers forward which was well short of buyers demand on the day. Top overall on the day was a 794kg Charolais cross heifer from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie peaking at £2052 and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Limousin crosses sold to £1963 twice for 647kg and 660kg from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. A day’s top pence per kilo of 318.5p was paid to Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton for a 531kg Limousin cross and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith sold 603kgs at 311.5p and Messrs Blake, Halfway Well 647kg at 303.5p. Steers saw a day’s top of £2024 for a 709kg Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton to £204 for 758kgs both purchased by Eric Hall. Dairy bred British Blues from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria sold to £1760 for 689kgs. Top pence per kilo of 286.5p was achieved three times firstly by Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle for 686kgs sold to Mr Eric Hall, secondly for 622kgs to John Penny, Leeds and lastly by Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie for 698kgs to Pioneers Foods, Carlisle.

CAST COWS & STOCK BULLS – A much larger show of 385 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with trade being slightly less for all classes

BEEF CAST COWS – M/s Henderson & Son, Park House farm sold the top priced blue cow for 850kg, 267.5p and £2273 to Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Crichton, Nether Locharwoods sold the top priced Charolais cow for 962kg, 223.5p and £2150 to M/s Roberts. M/s Smith, Westhills Farm sold the top priced Angus cow for 1094kg, 187.5p and £2051 to Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Haigh, Breckonhill Farm sold the top pence per kg blue cow for 756kg, 269.5p and £2037 to Owain Llyr. DA Harrison & Co, Hill House sold the top Priced Limousin x cow for 769kg 245.5p £1918 to Jewitts. 

DAIRY CAST COWS – A larger entry of 268 dairy cast cows on offer with a plainer show and trade being good for the better end of cows but plainer cows would be less on the week. M/s Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold a Norwegian Red heifer for 767kg, 217.5p and £1668 to Sean McGimpsey. M/s Batty, Flimby Hall sold the top priced Montbeliard cow for 855kg, 194.5p and £1662 to Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Wilson & Sons, Marsh House sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 878kg, 186.5p and £1637 to Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Harrison, Baggrow Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 866kg, 185.5p and £1606 to Sean McGimpsey. M/s Dart & Son, Flothers sold a Montbeliard cow for 788kg, 198.5p and £1564 to Sean McGimpsey. PRIME SHEEP – A good number was forward once more this week however numbers slightly less on the week, an overall average of 266ppk looked set to disappoint vendors however on reflection H&H Borderway average 12-15ppk better than other markets operating today. New vendor David Johnston, Whiteskye Farm, Wigton lead the days trading at £167 for Texel lambs selling to Michael Lomax. M/s Mitchinson, High Greenhill, Kirkcambeck sold the leading lambs per kilo as part of an exceptional run from this home with 39kg lambs to 384.6ppk or £150 gross. CAST EWES – A much better show was presented with an increase in price for all sections.  Topping the sale was a pen of 3 Texel ewes from Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close selling for £170.  Suffolk topped at £146 for a pair from Messrs Lindsay, High Crosby, Carlisle.  Mules topped at £118 from D & M McGregor, Lockerbie.  Hill sheep were in great demand with a pen of 8 Swaledales from D & J Richardson, Whitehead Brow selling for £102.  Cheviots topped at £96 again from the same good home.  A lot of customers are seeing the benefit of cast sheep trade in Borderway with many outlets available for all classes of sheep which can be sold to vendor’s advantage.
