Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 1st August 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A larger entry of 104 prime bulls forward at Borderway weekly sale whereby a good trade was seen throughout.  Nine bulls sold over £1900 to a day’s top of £2182 for a 810kg Limousin from Messrs Nimmo, Bogside Farm, Wishaw and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Charolais from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries to £2177.06 for 909kgs.  Aberdeen Angus to £2021.94 from Messrs Lawson, South Farm, Newcastle purchased by Morgan Helliwell.  Beef Shorthorns to £1968.91 from Messrs Sloan, Burnfoot Farm, Lander and a 717kg British Blue cross from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton to £1874.96.  Top overall pence per kilo of 275.50p was paid to Messrs Quine, Ballakilley Farm, Isle of Man for a 689kg Limousin and purchased by Frasers Butchers, Stranraer.

Black and white bulls to £1553.48 for 807kgs Holstein Friesian from Messrs Armour, Milton Farm, Moffat purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale.  A top pence per kilo of 218.50 was attained twice.  Firstly for a 606kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Carlisle and secondly by Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE – A larger show of 63 Prime steers and heifers forward achieving a fantastic trade throughout for all classes with 15 cattle selling from £1900 up to a day’s top of £2101.28 for a 736kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold a 747kg Limousin cross to £2043.05.  Messrs Millar, Woodhousehill, Lockerbie sold 738kg to £2025.81 and Messrs Spence, Roberthill, Lockerbie to £2012.49 all purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  British Blues to £1933.62 for 804kg from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton and Charolais to £1898.80 and £1898.39 752kg and 743kg crossbreds from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie.  Top pence per kilo steer was the top overall priced steer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, selling to 285.50p.  Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold a 679kg Limousin cross to 279.50 purchased by Owain Llyr.  Heifers enjoyed a days trading to a top of £1986.31 for a 601kg Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton.  Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold 642kgs to £1884.29 purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.  Charolais crosses from Messrs Kennedy, South Cowshaw, Lockerbie to £1863.77 for 747kg purchased by Mr Eric Hall and British Blues from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle to £1748.98 for 628kg purchased again by Steven Wilson Butchers.  Top overall pence per kilo of the day was 330ppk from Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton.  Messrs Blake, Halfway Well to 293.50 and Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith to 290.50p purchased by A & D Meats.  British Blues to 313.50 for a 538kg crossbred from Messrs Spence, Roberthill, Lockerbie purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

CAST COWS & STOCK BULLS – A smaller show of 278 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to the usual ringside of buyers which ensured a sharper trade for all classes.

BEEF CAST COWS – DA Harrison, Hill House’s run of outstanding cows topped at 771kg at 249.5p totalling £923 for a Limousin and 772kg at 247.5p totalling £1910 for a British Blue x and 817kg at 227.5p totalling £1858 for a Simmental x all purchased by Owain Llyr. Mr Andrew Kirkbride, Flimby Hall sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 675kg at 275.5p totalling £1859 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold the top priced Simmental cow for 941kg at 195.5p totalling £1839 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton Farm sold a Limousin cow for 756kg at 225.5p totalling £1704 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs James, Low Todholes sold a British Blue cow for 592kg at 259.5p totalling £1536 to Owain Llyr.

DAIRY CAST COWS – A mixed show of dairy cast cows was on offer with trade being sharper throughout. 172 dairy cast cows sold to average 153.5p being up 5-6p on the week. Messrs Hyslop, Meinside sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 861kg at 186.5p totalling £1605 and 884kg at 176.5p totalling £1560 to Les Fell and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hutchinson, The Hill sold the top priced Swedish Red cow for 873kg at 177.5p totalling £1549 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs McKelvey, Burnside sold a Holstein x cow for 812kg at 185.5p totalling £1506 to Steven & Phillip Bowes. Messrs Andrew Graham, Kirkhouse Dairy sold a Fleckvieh cow for 784kg at 186.5p totalling £1462 to Steven & Phillip Bowes. Messrs Fisher & Co, Geltside Farm sold the top priced Montbeliarde x cow for 759kg at 190.5p totalling £1445 to Les Fell. Messrs Haston & Son, Swordwellrigg Farm sold two Montbeliarde x heifers for 214.5p and 213.5p bought by Sean McGimpsey and Steven & Phillip Bowes. Messrs Magnay, Greenwrae sold a Holstein x heifer for 209.5p and a Montebeliarde x heifer for 203.5p bought by Sean McGimpsey and Les Fell.

CAST BULLS: 7 stock bulls sold well and topped at 1294kg at 155.5p totalling £2012 for a Friesian to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs MacDonald, Light Birks Farm sold the top priced British Blue stock bull for 1031kg at 192.5p totalling 1984 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP – Less lambs forward this week as several vendors stayed away with the steep decline in trade from Tuesday onwards last week, those forward were somewhat surprised to find Borderway 20+ppk ahead of other outlets in our locality last week. Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan lead the prices this week selling heavy Texel lambs at £162 to Mr R Skelton, Maryport. Messrs Urwin, Hill House, Kirklinton sold a great run of lambs to a sale topping 352.4ppk for 42kg lambs which grosses £148 selling to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston.

CAST EWES – A smaller show was presented to the usual ringside of buyers at the weekly sale of cast sheep. Top price of the day was £154 from Mr Pearson, Wavercroft. Mules topped at £130 for a pen from Low House Farm, Carlisle. Hill sheep topped at £85 from F & M Moore, Highside. Cheviots topped at £104. Overall a competitive trade continuing to beat and match other local centres.
