Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 8TH August 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock.

PRIME BULLS A smaller show of 72 prime bulls forward for selling sharper in the week once again. Bulls were forward in less quality and wight also. Topping the day’s trade at £2153.31 was a 799kg Limousin from Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Wigton and purchased by A&D Meats. Messrs Taylor, Skirling Craigs, Lanark reaped the reward for his first venture to Borderway selling a 816kg British Blue cross to £2076.72 and a 848kg Simmental to £2064.88. Galloways sold to £1631.49 weighing 714kgs from Klondyke Farms, Thornhill purchased by Jewitt Meats. A 683kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Claremont Properties sold for £1567.49. Top overall price per kilo of £279.50 was paid to Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan and purchased by Morgan Helliwell. British Blue crosses from Messrs Twentyman sold to 276.5p for 703kgs purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Black and whites peaked at £1653.15 for a 877kg Holstein from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and also £1542 for a 773kg Holstein Friesian from the same home purchased by Jewitt Meats. Top price per kilo of £213.50 was paid to Messrs Coulthard, Brisco Hill, Longtown for 551kg Holsten Friesian purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller show of 54 prime steers and heifers forward once again proving dearer on the week 12 animals sold over £1900 and 6 sold over £2000. The day’s overall top was £2135 for a 748gns steer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith, and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle. British Blue steers sold to £1979.15 for 721kgs from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and Charolais to £1932.23 for 705kgs from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg. Top price per kilo was £286.50 was paid to Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle and purchased by Eric Hall. Heifers saw a day’s top of £2127.88 for a 725kg British Blue cross from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill Carlisle, Messrs Blake, Halfway Well sold a  686kg Limousin to £2068.29. Messer Hird, West End, Cockermouth sold to £2060.51 for 688kgs and Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle to £2027.62 and £2022.90 for another 660kgs for West End Farm. Top overall price per kilo of £306.58 was paid to Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth purchased by Steven Wilson.

CAST COWS & STOCK BULLS – Once again a large show of 275 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to a keen ringside of buyers.

BEEF CAST COWS – Mr Ben Haigh, Breckonhill Farm sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 851kg at 266.5p totalling £2267 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Chappelhowe & Morley, Clifton Hill Gardens sold a great British Blue cow for 818kg at 245.5p totalling £2008 also to Owain Llyr. Seymour Farms sold a British Blue cow for 774kg at 257.5p totalling £1993 to Owain Llyr. DG Farming, Dinwoodie Green Farm sold the top priced Simmental cow for 973kg at 198.5p totalling £1931 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Hensall, Sarkshields sold the top priced Limousin cow for 916kg at 193.5p totalling £1772 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill’s run of well fleshed cows topped at 688kg at 254.5p totalling £1750 and 740kg at 234.5p totalling £1735 for a Limousin x both bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Cooper, Hallmoor sold the top priced Charolais cow for 958kg at 169.5p totalling £1623 to Sean McGimpsey.

DAIRY CAST COWS – A plain show of 180 dairy cast cows was on offer with all classes being in demand. Messrs Wilson, Southview Farm sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 875kg at 165.5p totalling £1448 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Workman, The Beeches run of Montbeliarde x cows topped at 744kg at 187.5p totalling £1395 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Paisley, Mickethwaite Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow for 639kg at 213.5p totalling £1364 to Les Fell and a Friesian heifer from the same home sold for 656kg at 201.5p totalling £1321 to Wesley Gracey. Messrs Brown, Mill of Aires sold a Friesian heifer 646kg at 206.5p totalling £1333 to Alan Jarvis.

CAST BULLS: 14 stock bulls on offer topped with a Charolais stock bull selling for 1127kg at 172.5p totalling £1944 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Dent, Beamwham sold the top prices Limousin stock bull for 981kg at 191.5p totalling £1878 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Fishwick & Son, Thornship Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 968kg at 190.5p totalling £1844 also to Owain Llyr.

CAST EWES – A much larger show of cast sheep was presented with 2/3rds of the sale being hill bred ewes. Topping the sale was a pure Texel ewe from SJ & ME, Bell, Lockerbie selling for £146. A great show of mule ewes were forward with top price coming from GS Scott, Bleabank, Cockermouth, selling a pen for £131. The sale was predominantly horned ewes with top price coming from L Smith & Co, Roachburn for £109. A good show was presented to the usual ringside buyers who more than keep up with the trade of other local auctions. However more cast sheep are required to satisfy demand
