PRIME BULLS – A very good entry of 96 prime bulls forward selling to a fantastic trade throughout. Topping the sale overall was a 854kg Limousin from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton sold 866kga to £2255 and 907kg at £2208 and Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton Farm, Annan sold 895kg at £2233 purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie and Field Fresh Trading. British Blues sold to £2056 for 752kg from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan to Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. Charolais sold to £1935 for an 808kg from Messrs Nutter, Manor Farm, Clitheroe purchased by A & D Meats. Simmentals sold to £1925 for 775kg from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie. Top overall pence per kilo of 291.5p was paid to the first prized bull a Limousin weighing 620kg from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna and purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Dairy bred bulls saw a day’s top of £1436 for a 676kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Top pence per kilo of 229.5p was paid to Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle for a Fleckvieh and top Friesian was 224.5p from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller entry of 47 prime steers and heifers forward whereby a marvellous show of quality was evident this anniversary Monday show & sale. Topping the sale overall was the first prize steer, a 730kg Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith amounting to £2106 and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Telford, Edenlin, Carlisle sold a 747kg crossbred to £2102 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle a 772kg Charolais cross from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie to £1987 purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Top pence per kilo steer at 288.5p was from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont for a 699kg Limousin cross and a 730kg from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith. Heifers peaked at £1995 for a 687kg Limousin cross from Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Crichton, Loughrig sold 671kg to £1935 and a 761kg Charolais cross from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerboe to £1929. CAST COWS & STOCK BULLS – A smaller show of 212 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer but there was a massive uplift in trade for all classes.

BEEF CAST COWS – Messrs Nimmo, Bogside Farm’s run of Limousin cows averages 705kg at 217.5p totalling £1537 and topped at 873kg at 219.5p totalling £1916, 842kg at 227.5p totalling £1915 bought by Sean McGimpsey and Messrs Roberts and other cows selling for 685kg at 232.5p totalling £1592, 673kg at 231.5p totalling £1558 and 772kg at 229.5p totalling £1771 and 660kg at 229.5p totalling £1514 bought by Jewitt Meats, Charles Kirkpatrick and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton Farm sold a Limousin cow for 815kg at 220.5p totalling £1797 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Edgar, Fellside Farm sold a Limousin cow for 783kg at 214.5p totalling £1679 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Capstick, Whicham Hall Farm sold a Limousin cow for 759kg at 219.5p totalling £1666 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Goddard, Frankstown Farm’s run of cows topped at 831kg at 196.5p totalling £1632 for a Shorthorn x and 852kg at 194.5p totalling £657 for a Simmental x both bought by Messrs Roberts. DG Farming sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 842kg at 193.5p totalling £1629 to Les Fell.

DAIRY CAST COWS – A classes of dairy cast cows would be sharper on the week. Hardgrove Farm’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 920kg at 169.5p totalling £1559 to Les Fell. Messrs Wilson & Sons, Marsh House sold a Holstein x cow for 846kg at 177.5p totalling £1501 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Armour, Milton Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 836kg at 171.5p totalling £1433 to Les Fell. Messrs Morley, Haddersale sold a Holstein x cow for 774kg at 182.5p totalling £1412 to Michael Helliwell.

PRIME SHEEP

On Monday 15th August Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 2112 prime sheep.  This is Borderway Anniversary week and in charge of judging the prime sheep was Mr Ryan Briggs, Briggsy’s Butchers, Jedburgh.  The show was kindly sponsored by Solway & Tyne Texel Club, RC Adamson Cattle Services Ltd and Beltflex Ltd.

A huge turnout of show sheep were presented before Ryan who conducted his work brilliantly with his Champion pens of 5 being the 1st prize Beltex x lambs from Messrs Murray, The Throp, Gilsland weighing 45kg they sold at £164 with the judge backing his decision.

Winning the Reserve Championship along with the Solway & Tyne 1st prize rosette for the best pen of 5 Texel x lambs was Messrs Millar, Crookholm which weighed 40.5kg and sold for £150 per head.

Messrs Murray, The Throp also won the individual lamb class with a Beltex x which led the day’s trade at £185 or 430.2p to M/s Griffiths, Ellesmere

A lovely sight to see was the young handlers show where Ryan awarding the following prizes.

Out with the show another UK leading average was achieved in Borderway with a vast variety of sheep represented in the average of 259ppk

CAST EWES – The weekly sale of cast ewes and rams had a larger show of 321 forward, with meaty ewes selling with ease and leaner sorts meeting resistance. Topping the sale was a pedigree Texel from Mr A Lumsdon, Greengate selling to £180. A total average for Texels was £107, with Mules topping at £119 from Mr Andrew Slack, Cockley Bank. Hill sheep topped at £115 for a pen of Cheviots from T Chalmers, Outer Woodhead. Swaledale ewes topped at £80 from JT James, Mid Todhills. Rams peaked at £155 for a pen of big Zwartbles .
