On Monday 23rd August 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.
PRIME BULLS – A very good show of 89 prime bulls were forward selling to a flyer of a trade once again, with 5 bulls selling to over £2000 and to a days top of £2140.35 for 841kg Limousin from Messrs Knox, Cragside, Kelso, purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Simmentals sold to £2104.25 for a 950kf from Messrs Allan, Glenturk Farm, Newton Stewart, purchased by Jewitt Meats. Charolais sold to £2073.35 from Messrs Stobart, The Square, Carlisle purchased by A & D Meats. Top overall pence per kilo of 274.5ppk was achieved twice by Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith, firstly for 675kg to Worsley Wholesale Butchers and secondly for 637kg to Bowland Foods.
Black and White bulls were easily sold and peaked at £1707.09 for a 757kg Fleckvieh of Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by A & D Meats. Holsteins to £1649 for 835kg from Messrs Pinguey, Haythwaite Lane Farm, Carlisle and to £1636.57 for 749kg from the same home purchased by Jewitt Meats. Top pence per kilo of 225.5ppk for the best Fleckvieh from South Lambhill and Holstein Friesians to 218.5ppk from Haythwaite Lane Farm.

PRIME CATTLE – A good show of 64 prime steers and heifers forward with all classes selling extremely well. Top overall was 798kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Harrison, Aldermanseat Gretna achieving a top of £2046.87 and purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg sold a 742kg Limousin cross for £1999.69. Messrs Murray, Prior House, Carlisle sold top price British Blue cross to £1894.37 for an 801kg and purchased by Eric Hall. Top price per kilo of £286.50 was achieved by Messrs Story, Newbriggin Farm Carlisle for a 693kg Limousin cross purchased by A and D Meats Heifers Peaked at £19770.11 for a 829kg Charolais from Messrs Vance Low Skeog, Newton Stewart Purchased by Border Meats Lockerbie. £1957.36 from Messrs Crighto Loughrigg for a 688kg Limousin cross Purchased by Pioneer foods, Carlisle. Messrs Lawson Hundith House, Wigton sold a 677kg to £1946.38 purchased by Mr Eric Hall, Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold a 658kg to Worsley Wholesale Butchers, British Blues from Messrs Murray, Prior House, Carlisle to £1743.01 for 737kg.

CAST COWS & STOCK BULLS – The weekly sale had a greater number forward and a better trade on the week.
BEEF CAST COWS – Topping the beef section at £1911 was an outstanding Blonde cow from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Topping the pence per kilo at 247.5ppk was a Limousin cow from TW Hunter, Upper Brydekirk also purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.
DAIRY CAST COWS – Topping the dairy section at £1590 was a Holstein cow from Messrs Nixon, Ribton House purchased by SH & PI Bowe. Top pence per kilo was attained by Messrs Bland, The Flatt with a British Friesian selling to 203.5ppk purchased by Hartshead Meats.

PRIME SHEEP – On Monday 22nd August Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 2312 prime sheep which saw 1809 lambs and 327 ewes forward. An overall sale average of 246.51p, SQQ 250p or £110.89 per head with all breeds and weights represented giving a true refection on trade. T & K Harrison, Lesson Hall, Wigton sold the sale leaders at £158 for 43kg Texel x lambs which also led per kilo at 367.4p selling to Vivers Scotlamb. Messrs Browell, Quarry House, Hexham followed up closely per head at £153 selling to Bowland Foods Ltd. Selling to 361.4ppk (41.5kg, £150) was Messrs Storey, Woodhead, Hexham with a pen of 8 to Bowland Foods Ltd. Leading the average per head at £139.24 was Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall who topped at £150 per head.

CAST EWES – A strong number was presented with heavy ewes continuing to meet high demand but leaner sorts being harder to place. Topping the sale was a Texel ewe from Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft to £147. Suffolks topped at £132 from Messrs Irving, Carlisle. Mule ewes topped at £128 from Messrs Richardson, Sheepriggs, Alston. Hill sheep met the most resistance with Cheviots topping at £78 from G Wilson, Reddings. Swaledale ewes sold to £72 from Messrs Lord, The Bog, Alston. Many more ewes could be sold to vendors advantage.
