Borderway Primestock Sale

On Monday 29^th August 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A good entry of 57 prime bulls for a bank holiday Monday resulting in all classes a very similar trade to that of last week. Top overall was an 883kg Limousin from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith equating to £2291. Messrs Wilson, Reddings, Moffat sold a 791kg Limousin to £2092. Simmentals from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie sold to £2047 for a 834kg yearling bull. A top pence per kilo of 264.5p was paid to Messrs Wilson, Reddings Farm. Black and white bulls peaked at £1755 for a 775kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Pinguey, Haythwaite Lane, Carlisle purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor a top pence per kilo of 228.5p went to Messrs Dixon, Hedley East Farm, Stocksfield for a Holstein Friesian.

PRIME CATTLE – A quieter day with a smaller offering of 44 prime steers and heifers forward, selling to yet another great trade throughout. Topping the sale at £2059 was a 742kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith. Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle to £2043 for a 746kg both selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Charolais crosses from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie to £1980 for a 797kg purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Top pence per kilo steer sold to 277.5ppk from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well.

Heifers sold to a day’s top of £2000 for 802kg Charolais cross from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie and to £1802 for a 659kg, Limousin cross from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle and to £1718 for a 670kg Hereford from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth.

Top overall pence per kilo of 320ppk was received by Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton for a superb 554kg Limousin cross purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A good entry of 236 cast cows were forward on bank holiday Monday. Trade was seen to be as fast as ever with a day’s top overall of £1982 achieved for a 1063kg Aberdeen Angus cow from Messrs Duncan, Whitehall Farm, Dumfries. Messrs Graham, Rose Castle, Carlisle sold a 899kg Limousin at £1973. Holstein cows peaked at £1719 for 927kg from Crossfell Holsteins, Penrith. Top overall pence per kilo of 231.5p was for a 6 year old Limousin cow from Rose Castle Farm. Messrs Jackson, Langdyke, Lockerbie sold the next best at 228.5p for a 768kg Limousin cross. Friesian cows sold to 197.5p for a 665kg cow for Messrs Marrs, Croft Farm, Carlisle.

CAST BULLS – A very big show of 19 cast bulls forward selling very well for the quality on offer resulting in a days top of £2149 for a 1026kg Simmental from Messrs Moffat, East Tarbrax, Lanark and Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Nordon, Hindrigg Farm, Wigton to £1981 for 1176kgs and a Holstein Friesian to £1542 for Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith. The aforementioned Simmental from East Tarbrax Farm was also the top pence per kilo at 209.5p.

PRIME SHEEP – A larger show of 2427 prime sheep were forward at Borderway this week. The rise in numbers did little to effect trade with Borderway being 5ppk ahead of Thursday’s trade on average, to level at 243ppk or £108.69 per head. Leading the trade at £151 was an outstanding Dutch Texel lamb from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Coanwood, which sold to Morgan Helliwell, Roachdale.

Top pence per kilo was Messrs Laird, Unity who sold 40.5kg Dutch Texel lambs to £140 or 345.7ppk purchased by Bwland Foods Ltd.

CAST EWES – The weekly sale of cast sheep and rams had another large show presented, despite ot being a Bank Holiday. The sale topped at £166 from TW & AM Moscrop, Ryeclose for a pure Texel ewe. Beltex topped at £150 from J Dickinson, High House. Suffolks sold to £144from J & M Wilson, Meadow Farm and Mules to £135 from Trevor Foster, Rye Hill.

Hill ewes topped at £117 from W & W Patterson, Appleby for a pen of 4 cheviots. Blackface sheep sold to £105 from Mr David Scott, Highmoor, Wigton. A good trade of eewes were presented to a full ringside of active buyers.
