On Monday 5th September 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.
PRIME BULLS – A much larger entry of over 100 prime bulls sold to a fantastic trade throughout. The day’s trading topped at £2618 for a 914kg Simmental from Messrs Lowry, New Steadings Farm, Lanark and was purchased by Mr Bill Howard. Limousins peaked at £2228 for 808kg from Messrs Harrison Grange Hall, Great Asby to Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow, Wigton sold a 790kg bull to £2208 purchased by Owain Llyr. British Blues sold to £1908 for a 648kg from Messrs Pattinson, Temon Farm, Brampton to Bowland Foods. This was also the top overall pence per kilo of 294.5ppk. Simmentals peaked at 286.5ppk from New Steading Lanark. Two Limousins sold to 279.5ppk firstly from Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow and secondly from Messrs Harrison, Grange Hall.
Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1658 for a 726kg Friesians from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. A 681kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Pinguey, Haythwaite Lane, Penrith sold to £1596 to A & D Meats and Holsteins to £1569 for a 712kg from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith. Top price per kilo was a Montbeliarde at 247.5ppk for a 620k from Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle to Bowland Foods with a Holstein Friesian to 234.5ppk from Haythwaite Lane.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller show of 37 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling to a flyer of a trade with many purchasers leaving empty handed. Vendors are urged to take full use of the live ring auction system at this time.
Top overall of £2134 went to Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill and was purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold a 730kg, to £2011 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Nicholson also sold the top British Blue cross steer to £1967 for 704kg. Charolais crosses sold to £2029 for 773kg from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie to Mr Eric Hall, and to £1959 for a 746kg to A & D Meats.
Top pence per kilo of 283.5ppk went to The Lake for their 691kg Limousin cross purchased by Pioneer Foods.
Heifers saw a day’s overall top of £1969 for 671kg, Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle. DA Harrison, Hill House sold a 686kg heifer to £1869 to Pioneer Foods. British Blue crosses topped at £1906 for a 614kg, from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan t Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton enjoyed his day’s trading, selling three heifers to average 206.5ppk up to a top of 315.5ppk for a 554kg Limosuin cross, purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop. Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton purchased a 521kg heifer from the same home at 301.5ppk. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold their 614kg heifer to 310ppk to Mr Eric Hall.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A massive show of 413 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to an increased ring side of buyers. With 145 beef cows selling to average 194.8ppk up 14.4p on the week.
R Wilshaw, Oulton Hall sold the top price Blonde cow for 831kg, 242.5ppk or £2015 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Johnstone, Westray Farm sold the top priced Shorthorn cow for 979kg, 201.5ppk or £1972 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Pattinson, Kinkry Hill Farm run of British Blue cows topped at 766kg, 254.5ppk or £1949 and to 758kg, 255.5ppk or £1936 purchased by Alan Jarvis and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Slack, Plumtree House sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 829kg, 234.5ppk or £1944 to Mr Kirkpatrick. DA Harrison & Co run of 10 outstanding cows averaged 727kg, 232.6ppk or £1691 and topped at 722kg, 266.5pk or £1924 and to 737kg, 260.5ppk or £1919 for a Limosuin cross purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Davidson, Muirhouse sold the top priced Simmental cow for 880kg, 216.5ppk or £1905 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Bradley & Son, Marina House sold to the top priced Parthanaise cow for 572kg, 244.5ppk or £1398.
A plainer show of dairy cows were on offer, however all classes being in demand. Messrs Robinson, Burtholme Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 823kg, 179.5ppk or £1477 and to 816kg, 179.5ppk or £1464 purchased by Scotbeef and Les Fell. Messrs Bargh, Woodclose Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 827kg, 176.5ppk or £1459 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Sewell, Woodside Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 781kg, 184.5ppk or £1440 to Philip Bowes. Messrs Graham & Co, Hillhead sold a British Friesian cow for 782kg, 179.5p £1403 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Jamieson, East Nethershields sold a Friesian heifer for 213.5ppk to Jewitts. Low Wood Dairy sold a Norwegian Red heifer for 202.5ppk to Hartshead Meats. Messrs Imrie, Harelawhole sold a Friesian heifer for 199.5ppk to Jewitts.
20 stock bulls were on offer this week, with David Wilson & Son, Marwhirn selling a Charolais stock bull for 1186kg, 185.5ppk or £2200 to Steven Helliwell. Messrs Neill & Son, Thornington Farm sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 986kg 216.5ppk or £2134 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Ridley, Maiden Castle sold the top priced Blonde stock bull for 923kg, 199.5ppk or £1841 to Michael Helliwell.

PRIME SHEEP – Another pleasing entry of lambs saw 86 vendors travel to Borderway to experience another trade which landed up the top of the league table.
106 pens sold to over £120 to a top of £176 with 28 of these in excess of £140, 31 pens also sold over 300ppk.
A superb 48kg Texel cross lamb from Messrs Harrison, Lesson Hal, Wigton lead the trade at £176 this also being the top pence per kilo at 366.7ppk, selling to local Butchers Mulholland, Great Orton. Messrs Story, Woodhead, Haltwhistle sold 74 lambs to a top of £158 and 7 at 45kg £156, a pen of 16 42kg to £148 per head.

CAST EWES – another larger entry of cast sheep was presented to a full ringside of buyers. Meaty ewes sold with ease, while leaner sorts met some resistance. Topping the sale was a pure Charollais from Mr Adam Gargett, Ainstable selling to £138. Mules topped at £110 from Armeria UK whose run of 72 ewes averaged £115. Suffolks topped at £130 from A & J Watson, Oakbank, while Hill sheep peaked at £70 for Swaledale from JW Smith-Jackson, Hightown.
Rams sold to £132 from Scott & Tony Dempster for a Beltex.
