On Monday 12th September 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A very good entry of 135 prime bulls forward at Borderway’s weekly sale, whereby a good trade was seen throughout for all shapes and sizes with five bulls selling over £2000 to a top of £2301.89 for a 867kg British Blue cross bred from Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall, Carlisle and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Charolais to £2089.64 from Messrs McClanachan, Garloch, Dumfries for 952kgs to A & D Meats.  Limousins to £2039.40 for 792kg from Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle and £2024.10 for a 780kg from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan and Maine Anjou to £2015.96 for 808kg from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie.  Top overall pence per kilo of 269.50 was paid to Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk for a 645kg Limousins cross purchased by Bowland Foods.  Dairy bred bulls to £1568.84 for a 728kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Holsteins Friesians to £1516.39 for a 694kg from Messrs Pinguey, Haythwaite Lane, Carlisle and British Friesians to £1398.63 for a 643kg from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton.  Top pence per kilo of 226.5p for a 577kg Friesian from Messrs Preston, Wedholme, Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE – A nice entry but short of supply with only 50 prime steers and heifers forward.  Top overall was a 736kg heifer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont peaking at £2093.92 for a Limousin cross and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  British Blue crosses to £1914.58 for a 685kg from Messrs Whitfield, Orton Rigg, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo of 284.50 was paid to Messrs Crichton for the aforementioned Limousin cross.

Steers sold to a day’s overall top of £2062.83 for a 798kg Aberdeen Angus; £2045.50 for a 719kg Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and Charolais to £2001.94 for a 796kg from Messrs Harrison, Aldermanseat, Gretna.  All of the above were purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Top overall pence per kilo of 285.5p was paid to Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands, Maryport for a 664kg British Blue cross purchased by Jamie Chapman Butchers.  Limousin crosses to 284.50 for 719kg from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle purchased by Eric Hall.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A good show of 333 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer.

Mr Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall’s run of 10 Limousin x cows  averaged 719kg, 241ppk and £1732 which topped at 813kg, 279.50ppk for £2275, 834kg at 248.50ppk selling for £2072, 771kg at 253.50ppk, £1954 and 697kg 259.50ppk for £1808 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick (x3) and Owain Llyr. A British Blue X cow sold for £1792 and was 699kg at 256.50ppk bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Iain Graham, Rosecastle Farm sold 7 outstanding Limousin Cows to average 754kg, 239ppk and £1802 which topped at 823kg, 237.5ppk for £1954, 787kg, 246.50ppk for £1939 and 744kg, 257.50 selling for £1915 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr (x2).Mr Andrew Scott, Shawhead sold the top price Charolais cow for £2047 which was 1016kg making 201.45ppk to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm, sold a Limousin cow for 845kg 228ppk and £1930 to Alan Jarvis. Howatson Farms sold the top priced Angus cow for 1001kg at 192.50ppk for £1926 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Fry, Porterstown Farm sold a Simmental heifer for 603kg, 240.5ppk for £1594 to Sean McGimpsey.

A plainer show of dairy cast cows with trade being slightly less on the week. Messrs Moffat, Kirtlebank Farm sold the top priced Holstein X cow for £1478 which was 833kg for 177.5ppk to Messrs Fell. Messrs Black, Craighouse sold a Holstein X for 853kg, 164.50ppk for £1403 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Vevers, High Plains sold a Holstein X cow for 813kg, 172.50ppk for £1402 selling to Sean McGimpsey.

Messrs Crozier, Cowlyers Farm sold a M.R.I Cow for 618kg, 218.50ppk and £1350 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Foster, Brackenthwaite Farm sold a Friesian heifer for 684kg, 189.5ppk for £1296 to David Holmes. Messrs Messenger, The Howes sold a Dairy Shorthorn Heifer for 191.5ppk to Capper Farming. Messrs Woodman & Son sold a Norwegian Red heifer for 190.5 to Messrs Fell. Messrs Sisson, Grain Head sold a Friesian heifer for 189.5ppk to David Holmes. Messrs Swainson & Son, Moor Park Farm sold a Swedish Red Heifer for 189.5ppk for Messrs Fell, Messrs McGarva, Horse Close Farm sold an Ayrshire Heifer for 189.5ppk to Messrs Fell. PRIME SHEEP – Another great entry of prime lambs forward this week saw a trade beyond vendors expectations with all weights and types experiencing a good enquiry. First the vendors from Backmuir Trading made the long trip from Aberdeenshire and were rewarded with the leading price of the day at £152 for heavy Texel’s selling to Mr M Helliwell, Rochdale. Leading per kilo at 318.8p was a cracking pen of 14 Dutch Texel cross lambs from Messrs Lee Agars Hill, Hexham which sold to Mr R Skelton, New Hall Farm.

CAST EWES – On Monday 12th of September Harrison and Hetherington held its weekly sale of cast sheep and rams in Borderway market. Another good show was presented and with an average of £93.83 being achieved. Topping the sale was a Texel ewe from K J & M Sharp, Wigton selling for £131 from Messrs Trafford, Springfield, Cockermouth. Mules topped at £1401 from R & E Hodgson, Penrith. Hill Ewes topped at £74 for a pen of Cheviots from D & A Telfer, Cleuchfoot Farm. Rams topped at £110 for 6 Beltex rams from Mr William Hall, Newcastle Upon Tyne, a good show of ewes were forward to the normal ringside of buyers.
