Middleton In Teesdale Prize Show & Sale of Swaledale Gimmer Lambs

On Friday 16^th September, Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their Annual Show & Sale of 5300 Swaledale gimmer lambs within Middleton in Teesdale market.

Once again the harvest of Weardale and Teesdale descending upon Middleton in Teesdale as the very best of offer arrived for one of the highlight sales in the North of England. A total average of £86.40 was achieved and despite being back £5 on the year many vendors were more than satisfied with the days trading.

Before the sale the pre-sale show took place, this year the judging fell to the hands of Swaledale experts Malcolm Coulthard & John Nutter with local man Harold Birkbeck acting as referee. After much deliberation it was decided the Champion pen should be awarded to F & MP Allinson, West Briscoe which went on to sell for £300.

However, top price of day went to the Reserve Champion pen from Burncroft Farms who went on to sell for £450. Pen after pen of quality was presented to an eager ringside of buyers with over 15 pens selling over £150. However, highlight of the day came from David & Michael Allinson whose run of 321 sheep were one of the best seen in recent times and sold to average £136.62. Smaller hill lambs were perhaps the best trade of the day with many May born lambs selling in excess of £80. A strong ringside of buyers was forward which saw customers from all four home nations purchasing the sheep on offer.
