STORE CATTLE – A very mixed bag of cattle were forward this week, as reported in previous weeks the demand for well fleshed and top quality sorts know no boundaries, however, those lacking strength or condition are now taking the brunt of overheads.

A fabulous run of Charolais cattle from various consignors were a big feature of this week’s sale with the 65 Charolais bullocks forward averaging £1440.46 to a sale leading top of £1800 for a fantastic bullock from Messrs Kyle, Spoutbank, Walton.

The Special prize for the top priced pen of 4 or more cattle were also claimed by a pen of 4 Charolais bullocks shown by Messrs Fisher, Lairdlaugh, Castle Douglas which sold at £1670 a head with Messrs Fisher selling 25 to average £1517.20, this home also consigned the top priced heifer of the day, a Limousin which traded at £1670.  Messrs Shaw, Crookdyke, Rockcliffe sold the top priced native bred at £1390 for a strong dairy bred Aberdeen Angus.

WEANED CALVES – A much improved show of 210 weaners were on offer with a keen ring side of buyers ensuring a great trade.  Messrs Wigham, Riggshields sold a Simmental bull for £1290.  Messrs Eve & Son, Stubbsgill run of 12 month old Limousin bulls topped at £1290.  Messrs Ashley, Laitha Farm sold a Limousin bull for £1230.  11 month old Limousin heifers from Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside sold to £1120 and £1100.  Messrs Brown, Temple House run of Charolais x bullocks topped at £1110 and £1080.  Messrs Mattinson & Son, Burthwaite run of Limousin x bullocks topped at £1080.
