On Monday 26th September 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A good entry of 119 prime bulls were forward whereby a solid trade was seen throughout. 9 bulls sold over £2000 to a day’s top of £2262.15 for a 914kg Limousin from Messrs Jackson, Lane End, Wigton. Messrs Story, Blackrigg, Carlisle sold a 872kg bull to £2219.24, Charolais to £2251.08 for a 888kg for from Messrs Jackson, Lane End, Wigton and purchased by A & D Meats. British Blue crosses to £2105.08 for an 805kg from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton. Blondes to £1962.09 for 702kg, from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm, Penrith.

Top pence per kilo was paid to Messrs Nimmo, Bogside Farm, Wishaw attaining 284.5p for a 765kg Limousin and purchased by Owain Llyr. Blondes to 279.5ppk from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop. Black and White bulls sold to a days top of £1577.75 for a 763kg British Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie purchased by Jewitt Meats. Montbeliarde sold to £1560.60 for a 680kg, from Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle with a top pence per kilo of 229.5p for the aforementioned Montbeliarde and 225.5p for a British Friesian from Messrs Preston, Wed Holme, Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE – A very light show of 44 Prime steers and heifers forward, well short of buyers requirements.  All classes were a flying trade selling to a top of £2189.66 for a 741kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and was purchased by Owain Llyr.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel sold their first of the season a 784kg Limousin cross to £2167.76 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Charolais topped at £2056.61 for 821kgs from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie and purchased by Eric Hall.  The same vendors sold another 809kg to £2050.82.  Galloway steers peaked at £1649.45 for a 683kg steer from Messrs Pattinson, Hott Bank, Hexham and was purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo of 295.50p was paid to Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle for the aforementioned Limousin cross.

Heifers topped at £2081.66 for an 831kg Charolais cross from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Limousin crosses to £1872.53 for 638kg from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith purchased by Pioneer Foods.  The same vendors sold a 620kg heifer to £1819.70 purchased by Jamie Chapman Butchers.  Top overall pence per kilo at 303.50 was paid to Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna for one of their Limousin crosses, the same vendor also sold top British Blue cross to 299.50p and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – The largest show of 487 cast cows and stock bulls in the UK were on offer to a keen ringside of buyers, which proved Carlisle is the only market to sell your cows.

A great entry of 192 beef cows and beef stock bulls sold to average 191.9ppk.

Mr Kevin Watret, Northfield Park run of outstanding Blue cows sold to a top of 978kg, 279.5ppk or £2733 and 864kg, 262.5ppk or £2268, 823kg, 268.5ppk or £2209 and 782kg, 268.5ppk r £2099, 747kg, 274.5ppk or £2050 purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick, and Owain Llyr. Me Alan Twentyman, Osborne Farm sold a British Blue cow for 835kg, 256.5ppk or £2141 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hutchinson, Bil Hill sold a British Blue cow for 861kg, 224.5ppk or £1932 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Duncan, Whitehall Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 1024kg, 185.5ppk or £1899 to Mr Kirkpatrick and Messrs Osborne, Castlehill sold the top price per kilo Aberdeen Angus cow for 661kg, 214.5ppk or £1417 to Messrs Roberts.

Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 756kg, 244.5ppk or £1848 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Cowx & Son, Hudscales sold a Limousin cow for 798kg, 228.5ppk or £1823 and 733kg, 236.5ppk or £1733 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm sold a Limousin cow for 732kg, 237.5ppk or £1738 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Osborne, Castlehill sold the top priced Simmental cow for 908kg, 200.5ppk or £1820 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Mr Hamish Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold the top priced Charolais cow for 833kg, 218.5ppk or £1820 to Mr Kirkpatrick.

A great entry of 295 dairy cast cows were on offer with the better end selling sharper on the week.

Bluestone Farming sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 777kg, 199.5p or £1550 and to 878kg, 174.5p or £1532 to Sean McGimpsey and Messrs Roberts. Messrs Pattinson & son, Walby Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 897kg, 171.5ppk or £1538 to Les Fell.  Messrs Irving, Brunthill sold a Holstein cross cow for 866kg, 177.5ppk or £1537 to Scotbeef. Hardgrove Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 850kg, 79.5ppk or £1525 to Les Fell. Messrs Faulder, Croft House Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 839kg, 180.5p or £1514 to Les Fell. PRIME SHEEP – On Monday 26th September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep, numbers held firm on the week and to the great surprise of the vendors, so did trade, as another fruitful day was had in Borderway.  An overall average of 245 SQQ of 246 or £108 per head was achieved.  Messrs Hamilton, Kirkton of Crawford made the trip from Abington and were rewarded with the days leading price of £152 paid for 51kg Texel cross lambs

Messrs Laird, Unity, Brampton sold a pair of 43.5kg Dutch Texel lambs at 344.8ppk or £150 to lead the price per head column.
