On Monday 10th October 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.
PRIME BULLS – Yet another good entry of 121 prime bulls froward seeing a trade ease 5-10p on the week. Topping the sale overall was 1030kg Limousin from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning. Keswick selling to £2322 Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Brampton sold 921kgs to £2279, Charolais to £1972 for 827kgs from Messrs Stott, Shaw Head, Longtown. Messrs Storey, Limestone Cottage, Penrith sold another to £1922 a 698kgs Blonde cross from Messrs Wilshaw, Oulton Hall Wigton sold to £1839. Top overall Price per kilo of 275.50 was paid to Oulton Hall, Wigton for 628kgs for a Blonde cross purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Black and whites sold to £1522 for a 700jg Holstein from Messrs Bainbridge, North Wood View, Carlisle purchased by Jewitt Meats.

PRIME CATTLE – A larger entry of 54 prime steers and heifers forward selling yet again to a brilliant trade. A day’s top of £2160 was achieved for a 741kg British Blue cross heifer from Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Limousins sold to £1928 for 695kg from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Charolais sold to £1848 for 756kg from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Top pence per kilo overall was a 538kg Limousin cross from Messrs Jarman, Browtop, Workington selling to 320ppk and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth sold a 623kg Limousin x to 299.5p to A & D Meats and a further three to 295.5p from Messrs Maw, Wintershields, Carlisle. Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth and Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth. British Blues sold to 291.5p for 741kg from Kirkbarrow Hall. Steers saw a day’s top of £2000 for a 734kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie and purchased by Pioneer Foods. The same vendor also sold the best Charolais to £1971 for 726kg to Mr Eric Hall. British Blue crosses sold to £1942 for 700kgs from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. A few traditional breeds forward saw a top of £1566 for a 671kg Galloway from Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close, Carlisle. Belted Galloways sold to £1375 for a 589kg steer from Messrs McKeown, North Park, Stranraer. Top pence per kilo of 277.5p was paid to Messrs Nicholson, The Lake with one of their British Blue purchased by Bowland Foods.

One of the largest shows of 530 cast cows and stock bulls with 151 vendors travelling from Stranraer, Fife, Kelso, Wooler & Pickering to take advantage of Borderway’s flying trade with 235 beef cows on offer. Messrs Wainwright, Todd Hall’s run of British Blue x cows sold to average 749kg at 257.5p totalling £1929 and topped at 772kg at 274.5p totalling £2119 and 770kg at 272.5p totalling £2098 both bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow for 789kg at 261.5p totalling £2063 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Scott, Thirwall Castle Farm sold a British Blue x cow for 819kg at 248.5p totalling £2035 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Blake, Halfpenny Well sold a Limousin cow for 796kg at 253.5p totalling £2017 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Nixon, Hunters Hall’s cows topped at 814kg at 244.5p totalling £1990 and 708kg at 250.5p totalling £1773 to Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Messrs Harrington, Grange Grassing sold the top priced Charolais cow for 843kg at 206.5p totalling £1740 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Timm, West Farm, Pickering sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 897kg at 193.5p totalling £1735 to Alan Jarvis. A good entry of 295 dairy cast cows was forward with plainer cows being slightly less but better cows good to sell. Messrs Vance & Sons, High Skeog sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 879kg at 167.5p totalling £1472 to Charles Kirkpatrick. The downturn in weather conditions hampered numbers this week in Borderway as lambs endured a torrid few nights leaving vendors in two minds whether to draw at them. An SQQ of 251p and per head average of £111.49. All classes set off with buyers intent on bringing the price back but this was short lived as demand outweighed supply. A pen of 50kg Dutch Texel lambs from Messrs Story, Woodhead, Haltwhistle led the day’s trading at £156 selling to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston. Niamh Scott, Thirwall Castle sold another great run to lead the day per kilo at 340.9p for 44kg lambs which came out at £150 per head again to Bowlands Foods Ltd.

CAST EWES – Another strong show of ewes was presented with a trade slightly sharper on the week. Topping the section was a pen of 4 Texels from L Smith & Co, Roachburn for £155. Mules topped at £120 from M & A Donald, Low Row. Suffolks topped at £124 from the same home. Hill ewes met a strong trade with a pen of Cheviots from Mr Robert McConnell, Newton Stewart selling for £110. Swaledale ewes topped at £158 from F & M Moore, Highside. Rams topped at £180 for a Charolais ram from Armeria UK, Carlisle. The same home sold a pen of 4 Texel rams to £155. Overall a good show of ewes and rams but many more needed to satisfy demand.
