Lazonby Annual Swaledale Ewes & Bluefaced Leicester Rams

On Saturday 8th October at Lazonby Mart, Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held its annual show and sale of Draft Swaledale ewes, followed by the annual sale of Bluefaced Leicester Rams. This event kindly sponsored by Eden Farm supplies and Edgar’s Outdoor Catering.

SWALEDALES:  

A strong show of 1400 ewes were presented to a strong ringside of buyers who ensured all classes were Keenly bid for. Before the sale the show took place with local man Joshua Wade performing the judging. After much deliberation and consideration it was decided that the champion pen should be awarded to regular supporters GA & DE Thompson, Howburn whose pen of 10 went on to make top price of the day of £170 selling to Miss Chloe James, Midtodhills. The second Prize pen of ewes also from the same home went on to make £158 selling again to the same home. Reserve Championship went to the first prize pen of shearlings from Mr Paul Staley, Broadmea who sold a pen of 10 to £165 to Mr Phil Dixon, Townfoot sold a pen of 15 to £150. Ewe lambs were a good trade with top price going to the first prize pen of lambs from WD & B Thompson, East Unthank who sold 10 to £72. Broken mouth ewes topped at £68 from TR & KM Wallace, Farney Shields. A overall good trade with many more ewes needed to satisfy demand.

BLUEFACED LEICSTERS:

A good show of 100 rams was presented with a good ringside of buyers throughout with the customers happy with the days trading. A strong show of Swaledale, Texel & Blue Faced Leicester’s were presented. However before the sale the show took place. This year it was kindly judged by local breeder Joshua Wade who awarded the championship to a shearling from Philip & Jenifer Dawson, School Cottage. This shearling was a son of Carry House M26 out of a dam sired by the Kentmere Hall K2. This shearling, after some ferocious bidding went on to sell for £2800 selling to Mr Wallace, Farney Shields. The Reserve Champion, the first prize gimmer shearling from Peter Smith, Parson Shields who went on to sell for £450 to Mr Jackson Twentyman, Penrith. Rams also sold well from Mr W & HI Watson, Sanders Close, who sold 3 shearlings to £1000. Ram Lambs topped at £1000 for the first prize lamb from Messrs Hodgson Hill House West, who went to Mr White, Skipton. Texels rams topped at £350 from Cw, Lee, Alston.
