Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 17th October 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A larger entry of 103 prime bulls were forward, topping todays at £2218 was a Blonde bull from Messrs Hyslop, Gillrig, Lockerbie. Topping the pence per kilo section was Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith with a Limousin selling to 295.5ppk.

The dairy section topped at £1462 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Murray & Son, Conheath Farm, Dumfries. British Friesian’s topped the pence per kilo in this section at 219.5ppk from Messrs Mattocks, Aulby Farm, Penrith.

All classes sold well on the week, but fall short of numbers with more required week on week.

PRIME CATTLE – Once again a larger entry of 73 prime cattle forward on Monday. A mixed show of quality but overall trade was good throughout. Top price of the day was £2073 for a Charolais heifer from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lochmaben which was purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill. This was followed closely by a Charolais bullock at £2041 from the same good home. Simmentals sold to a top of £2002 for a steer from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top price Limousin came from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown at £1982 also purchased by Pioneers Foods.

Top price per kilo at 304.5p was a Limousin heifer from Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton purchased by Alan Jarvis. Charolais heifers sold to 269.5p from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald purchased by Pioneer Foods. Steers sold to 285.5p for a Limousin from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown again purchased by Pioneer.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Once again a great entry of 423 cast cows and stock bulls on offer with a lift in trade on the week and 200 beef cows sold. DA Harrsion & Co, Hill House’s run of cows topped at 785kg at 254.5p totalling £1997 for a Limousin x and 764kg at 203.5p totalling £1961 for an Aberdeen Angus x and a Limousin x cow for 542kg at 257.5p totalling £1395 bought by Owain Llyr, Alan Jarvis and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm sold an outstanding Limousin cow for 726kg at 274.5p totalling £1992 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Wilson, Low Farm’s Limousin x cows topped at 786kg at 236.5p totalling £1858 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold a Limousin cow for 810kg at 225.5p totalling £1826 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Furlong & Co, Ridley Farm’s run of cows topped at 896kg at 199.5p totalling £1787 for a British Blue x to Alan Jarvis. JTC Excavations, Making Place Farm sold a British Blue x cow for 720kg at 237.5p totalling £1710 to Owain Llyr.

All classes of 223 dairy cast cows would be sharper on the week to average 141.5p, up 10.9p on the week. Mr Colin Horsley, Whitrigg Grange’s Holstein x cows topped at 861kg at 179.5p totalling £1545 and 812kg at 181.5p totalling £1545 and 812kg at 181.5p totalling £1473 to Charles Kirkpatrick and Phillip Bowes. Messrs Bell, Torpenhow Hall sold a Holstein x cow for 836kg at 173.5p totalling £1450 to Les Fell. Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold the top priced Norwegian Red cow for 695kg at 208.5p totalling £1449 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Rudd & Sons, Grassing Farm Holstein x cows topped at 837kg at 172.5p totalling £1443 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Harrison, Hazel Head sold a Holstein x heifer for 209.5p to Capper Farming. PRIME SHEEP: Numbers continue to come forward in steady quantities this said Borderway continues to fair well against competitors with another UK leading average of 248ppk and SQQ of 280p or £112.81 per head. A feature of the sale was a large entry of mule wethers which sold to £120 and averaged £109.12 per head. Top of the day was Messrs Harrison, Lesson Hall with a marvellous single selling at £160 to Mr Morgan Helliwell.

CAST EWES – At the weekly sale of cast sheep and ram a much larger show of 400 ewes were presented to a keen ring side of buyers ensuring all sheep were keenly bid for with over 10 active buyers.

Topping the sale was a Texel Ram at £136 from Messrs Brough, Longtown and S A Sim, Wigton.  Texels topped at £135 for a pen of 15 from Mr Taylor, Longthorns.  The same home also topped the Suffolks at £130 for a pen of 21.  Swaledale ewes topped at £55 for a pen of 13 from T P Wigham, Hargill House.  Cheviots made £116 from Mr Kendall, Carlisle.  Mules topped at £115 for a pen of 7 from JW & G Roe, Carlisle
