On Monday 24th October 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A larger show of 104 prime bulls was on offer with 12 bulls selling for £2000 plus.

Messrs Nimmo,  Bogside Farm sold 3 Limousin bulls to average 776kg, 281.6p and £2185 and topped at 871kg, 287.5p, £2504 and 748kg, 281.5p £2105 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Bowland Foods. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor sold 2 Limousin bulls for 869kg, 273.5p, £2376 and 977kg 239.5p, £2339 bought by Bowland Foods and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses charolais bulls topped at 1004kg, 231.5p £2324 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains sold 4 British Blue bulls for 759kg, 287.5p £2182 and 909kg, 227p, £2067 to Bowland Foods and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Rome & Co, Niven Hill sold 2 Limousin bulls which topped at 691kg, 283.5p, £1958 bought by Messrs Roberts. Messrs Nixon, Hunters Hall sold 2 Limousin bulls for 659kg, 281.5p, £1855 and 660kg, 281.5p, £1857 to Bowland foods. Messrs G Wilson, Reddings sold a Limousin bull for 803kg, 266.5p, £2140 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.

PRIME CATTLE – A total of 52 prime cattle was on offer with trade being sharper on the week. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks’ run of Limousin x bullocks sold to average 703kg at 287p totalling £2020 which topped at 730kg at 290.5p totalling £2120 and 716kg at 285.5p totalling £2044 purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill and Pioneer Foods. Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall sold a Limousin x bullock for 720kg at 277.5p totalling £1998 to Pioneer Foods. Messrs Bell & Sons, Hoddomtown’s run of bullocks topped at 746kg at 263.5p totalling £1965 to Eric Hall, Messrs Lawson, Stubbsgill Farm sold a Limousin x bullock for 669kg at 285.5p totalling £1910 to Steven Wilson, Corby Hill. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake sold Limousin x bullocks topped at 686kg at 277.5p to £1903 to Pioneer Foods. Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm sold an outstanding British Blue x heifer for 747kg at 281.5p totalling £2102 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Dent, Elm House run of cattle topped at 666kg at 287.5p totalling £1914 for a Limousin x heifer to Steven Wilson. Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald Farm sold the top priced Charolais x heifer for 392kg at 270.5p totalling £1871 to Eric Hall. Messrs Stamper & Son, Rose Farm sold the top priced British Blue x heifer for 652kg at 284.5p totalling £1854 to Pioneer Foods. Messrs Little, Greenhill’s run of Limousin x heifers sold to average 539kg at 293p totalling £1579 which topped at 543kg at 301.5p totalling £1637 and 559kg at 297.5p totalling £1663 bought by Steven Wilson and Rob Medcalf.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Once again a great entry of 384 cast cows and stock bulls was forward with 192 beef cows and stock bulls on offer. Messrs Leiper & Sons, Bank Top, Morpeth’s run of 9 cast cows sold to average 757kg at 208.5p totalling £1575 which topped at 877kg at 265.5p totalling £2328, 825kg at 223.5p totalling £1843 and 782kg at 227.5p totalling £1779 for Limousin x’s and 885kg at 217.5p totalling £1924 for a British Blue x all purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick(x3) and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Studholme & Son, Nealhouse Farm sold the top priced British Blue x cow for 819kg at 235.5p totalling £1928 also to Charles Kirkpatrick. Lilburn Estates, Wooler’s run of cows topped at 859kg at 213.5p totalling £823 for an Aberdeen Angus x cow and 831kg at 213.5p totalling £1774 for a Stabilizer x cow both purchased by Alan Jarvis. Messrs Moore & Son, Highside Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 732kg at 218.5p totalling £1599 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

192 dairy cast cows were on offer with a plainer show forward, however, all classes being in demand. Messrs Moore, Brayshaw, Egremont’s run of cows topped at 839kg at 191.5p totalling £1606 for a Montbeliarde x cow bought by Alan Jarvis. Messrs Johnston, Cote House Farm sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 864kg at 175.5p totalling £1516 to Les Fell. Mr Horsley, Whitrigg Grange sold a Holstein x cow for 893kg at 169.5p totalling £1513 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Graham & Sons, Campfield sold the top priced Ayrshire cow for 771kg at 182.5p totalling £1407 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Dockery, Kelsick House sold the top priced Friesian cow for 835kg at £1365 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Byers & Son, Woodslee sold a Holstein x Heifer for 584kg at 201.5p totalling £1176 to Les Fell. Messrs Graham & Co, Hillhead sold the top priced Friesian Heifer for 598kg at 189.5p totalling £1133 to Les Fell. Messrs Tiffin, Swinsty Farm sold the top priced Fleckvieh x heifer for 665kg at 189.5p totalling £1260.

CAST BULLS – 17 stock bulls on offer. Messrs Johnston & Son, Orion House sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1084kg at 177.5p totalling £1924 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Byers, Cubby Hill sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 1037kg at 175.5p totalling £1819 to Les Fell. Messrs Longlands, Tone Hall sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1159kg at 155.5p totalling £1802 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

PRIME SHEEP: Another pleasing entry of prime sheep this week saw a favourable trade for well finished lambs and the last graded types, lean and more commercial types again took slightly more placing with weight certainly loosing its edge. An overall average of 238p and a SQQ of 246p was awarded. Top of the day was an exceptional Dutch Texel cross lamb from Messrs Urwin, Hill House. This claimed both per head and per kilo title at £170 and 395ppk. Plenty of lambs hitting the correct specification sold at 260-270p with the best types 280-395ppk.

CAST EWES – On Monday 24th of October Harrison and Hetherington held its weekly sale of cast sheep & rams in Borderway. A large show was presented to the regular ringside of buyers ensuring all classes were keenly bid for beating many other local centres. Topping the sale was a Blue Texel ewe from RT Pattinson, Kinkry Hill selling for £150. Texels topped at £146 from G M Johnston, Springfield. Blue Faced Leicesters topped at £128 from JT James, Midtodhills. Cheviots topped at £104 from GM Farish High Springfield, with swaledales topping at £72 from Josh Wade, Ewan Close. Suffolks topped at £117 from JH & GD Irving, New Sandsfield. Mules topped at £100 from L & R Foxcroft, Low Row. Herdwicks topped at £46 for a pen of 29 from E Nixon, Ribton House.

Many more cast ewes could be sold to vendors advantage in Borderway.
