On Monday 31st October 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – Yet another good entry of 96 prime bulls forward selling at a mixed trade, anything showing good flesh easily sold and leaner cattle harder to cash.  Top overall was a British Blue bull from Messrs Carr, Little Bavington, Newcastle peaking at £2345.15 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Limousins sold to £2281 from Messrs Goldie, Townfoot Farm, Dumfries.  Messrs Mulholland, Great Orton to £2120.97.  Charolais to £2040.18 from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries.  Top overall pence per kilo of 279.00 was paid to Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie for their 730kgs Limousin.

Dairy bred bulls to £1627.83 for a 745kg Montbeliarde from Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle purchased by Jewitts Meats.  Fleckviehs to £1460.55 from Messrs Pinguey, Haythwaite Lane and Friesians to £1450.55 from Messrs Mattocks, Aulby Farm, Penrith.  Top pence per kilo of 227.50 for a Fleckvieh from Haythwaite Lane and Friesians to 216.50 from Aulby Farm.

PRIME CATTLE – A good entry yet again of 60 Prime steers and heifers forward achieving a good trade throughout the sale.  Top overall was a 798kg Charolais cross steer from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  The same home sold another to £2070 for 780kgs to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Limousins to £2024.10 from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton for 692kg and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill.  Messrs McKelvey, Burnside, Lochmaben, Lockerbie to £2018.56 and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Top overall steer pence per kilo of 292.50 was for the aforementioned Limousin cross from Bothel Parks selling to Steven Wilson Butchers

Heifers saw a day’s top of £1933.50 for a 748kg Limousin cross from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth selling to Mr Eric Hall.  Charolais to £1847.39 for a 673kgs from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw and purchased by A & D Meats.  Simmentals to £1833.96 from Rose Farm, Cockermouth purchased by Mr Eric Hall purchased again by A & D Meats.  Top overall pence per kilo of 302.5 and 301.5 was for two heifers from Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton weighing 551kg and 575 kgs both purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Great Orton, Carlisle

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Once again a massive show of 469 cast cows and stock bulls was forward with trade being similar to last weeks flying trade. The 207 beef cows forward were topped by Mr George Brough, Old Rectory Farm sold an outstanding Limousin cow for 849kg at 243.5p totalling £2067 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold the top priced British Blue x cow for 802kg at 245.5p totalling £1968 also to Owain Llyr. Mr Ian Bell, Hallbankgate Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow for 957kg at 199.5p totalling £1909 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Sisson & Sons, Kelbarrow sold the top priced Limousin x cow for 768kg at 228.5p totalling £1754 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Brown & Co, Mosshead Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 548kg at 239.5p totalling £1312 to Les Fell.

A large entry of 262 dairy cast cows was on offer with a plainer show being forward. Messrs Mandale & Son, Lambfield Farm sold the top priced Danish Red cow for 951kg at 164.5p totalling £1564 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Bluestone Farming’s run of Fleckvieh cows sold for 834kg at 174.5p totalling £1463 and 862kg at 169.5p totalling £1461 also a Fleckvieh heifer selling for 594kg at 227.5p totalling £1351 purchased by Messrs Roberts, Michael Helliwell & Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Edgar & Co, Whitecroft Mains sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 737kg at 181.5p totalling £1337 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Imrie, Harelawhole sold the top priced Friesian cow for 870kg at 153.5p totalling £1335 to Les Fell. Messrs Donald & Son, Lamonby Hall sold the top priced Norwegian Red heifer for 187.5p to David Holmes. Messrs Messenger, The Howes sold a Norwegian Red heifer for 187.5p to Les Fell. Messrs Pinguey, Haythwaite Lane Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 183.5p to Les Fell.

Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg Farm sold a Simmental stock bull for 11247kg at 155.5p totalling £1939 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Smith, Lake View sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1139kg at 169.5p totalling £1930 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday the 31st October 2022 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep. After recording last week’s UK leading trade all eyes were on Borderway as the fall in prime sheep look set to strike, this wasn’t the case as Ring 2 flexed her muscles again, remarkably seeing all averages rise on the week with an SQQ of 254p (+9p) being achieved. Leading the day’s trade at £160 was a fabulous Beltex cross this was consigned by Messrs Little, Hollands, Penton which sold to Bowland Foods Ltd. Beltex also posted the leading price per head at 342.5p for a pair of 40kg peaches to Messrs Dempster, Castlehill which sold to Mr A Dawson on behalf of Vivers, Scotlamb.

CAST EWES – On Monday 31st October Harrison and Hetherington held its weekly sale of cast sheep and rams in Borderway Market. A trade took place that was far from scary as vendors were treated to a Halloween treat. Topping the sale was a Beltex ewe from M Vickers & Daughters, Longtown for £150. Mules topped at £97 from J Clark, Penrith for a strong pen. Hill sheep were a good trade with top price for a Cheviot being £111 from NJ & C Barker, Middle Bank. Horned ewes topped at £64 for a pen from L Smith & Co, Roachburn. A lot of ewes are not forward and are meeting a good trade often beating other local auctions.
