Kirkby Stephen Annual Prize Show and Sale of Suckled Calves

Kirkby Stephen, Faraday Road, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4QL

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual prize show and sale of Suckled Calves when a catalogued entry of 560 calves were on offer.

Topping the sale at £4500 was the second prized Limousin cross an 8 month old Heifer consigned by Messrs Brown, Asby Hall, Great Asby selling to Neil Slack, Plump Tree House, Newby.

Taking the overall championship was another 6 month old Limousin cross heifer also consigned by Messrs Brown, Asby hall which went on to make £3500 selling to D Harrison, Wigton.

Limousin heifers also sold to £3000 this time for a 7 month old from G Bell, Haas Side Farm, Lockerbie selling to G Carroll, Huntley.

Messrs Brown, Asby Hall next topped at £2900 for the third prize Limousin cross heifer at 11 months selling to D Jarman, Workington.

This same home also sold another 7 month old Limousin heifer to make £2800 selling to Messrs Hicks, Reading.

Completing the quintet of heifers selling in excess of £2000 from Asby Hall was another 7 month old Limousin selling to £2050 to Messrs Bunting, Dumfries.

Next making to £2900 was the first prize haltered heifer which was 11 month old pure Limousin consigned by Messrs Sedgley, Low Bank House and was bought by Messrs Cropper, Long Preston.

Asby Hall also did the double in taking the overall reserve championship with a 6 month old Limousin cross steer which sold to £1480 to Messrs Cropper, Long Preston.

Steers topped at £1600 twice, firstly for the second prize 7 month old Limousin cross which was consigned by G Bell, Lockerbie and was purchased by Messrs Harrison, Driffield. Haas Side Farm also took the reserve champion steer ticket with a 7 month old Limousin cross which went on to sell for £1580 to Messrs Duffton, Huntly.

Messrs Brown also made £1600 for a 11 month old Limousin cross steer.

With this home also selling another two 7 month old Limousin cross steers to make £1520 and £1500 both selling to Messrs Dent, Bolton.

The fantastic consignment of 51 suckled calves from Asby Hall sold to average a magnificent £1341.27 which is believed to be a record.

Good quality calves were in extreme demand from a ram packed ringside of potential buyers from all parts of the country from Aberdeenshire to Huntly.

A steer average of £1057.74 and heifer average of £1044.50 was achieved resulting in an overall sale average of £1051.29 for fifty more calves sold on the year.

115 calves sold between £1200-£4500

Top quality calves sold to extreme rates with plenty of 5-8 month old steers regularly selling between £1250 to £1400 and smart heifers selling between £1300-£1800 with these classes said to be the dearest ever seen.
