Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 2,637 sheep were forward consisting of 1960 prime lambs and 677 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £168 were 44kg Rouge cross lambs from Messrs Fell, Chapel Farm, Keswick.

Topping at 407.5p/kg were a pen of six 40kg Beltex cross lambs which made £163 from Thompson Livestock, Penrith. Another pen of six 40kg Beltex cross lambs sold to make £161 (402.5p/kg). A pen of three 40kg lambs making £158 (395p/kg) and a pen of nine 41kg lambs selling for £158 (385.4p/kg) were sold, all from Thompson Livestock.

Messrs Jackson, Little Eccleston Hall, Great Eccleston sold a pen of three 42kg Beltex cross lambs to make £164 (390.5p/kg).

Messrs Atkinson, Abbey Park, Bleatarn sold a pen of five 46kg Beltex cross lambs to make £161.

Messrs Lee, Carkin Moor Farm, Richmond sold a pen of eleven 41kg Beltex cross lambs to make £156 (380.5p/kg).  This home also sold a pen of twenty nine 45kg lambs to make £151.50.

It wasn’t a trick but more of a massive treat that sellers got here at Kirkby Stephen; leading the way by a massive margin once again, achieving a SQQ average of 270.3p/kg and an overall sale average of 260.75p/kg and £117.02.

34 pens and 161 lambs sold between £150 - £168

90 pens and 421 lambs sold between £140 - £168

26 pens and 115 lambs sold between 350 – 407p/kg

560 Beltex cross lambs sold to average £138.62.

Heavy lambs were also in extreme demand with 50kg Texel cross lambs selling for £162 (324p/kg) from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm.

Messrs Atkinson, Abbey Park, Bleatarn sold a pen of twenty 50kg Texel cross lambs to make £144 (288p/kg)

Mule lambs topped at £119 for a pen of 55kg from Messrs Fairburn, Marriforth, Ripon.

Messrs Harrison, High Beck Head, Barnard Castle sold a pen of ten 52kg Mules to make £117.50 (226p/kg)

Mules also topped at 236.7p/kg for a pen of fourteen 45kg lambs which made £106.50 from Messrs Stephenson, The Gables, Ravenstonedale.

Messrs Raine & Davidson, Thorney Gale sold a pen of twelve 49kg Mules to make £111.50 (227.6p/kg)

Swaledale lambs topped at £92 and 214p/kg for a pen of fifty 43kg lambs from Messrs Iceton, High Birk Hatt, Barnard Castle.

Cast sheep topped at £166 for a Suffolk ewe from Messrs Brass, Bridge End Farm, Soulby.

Swaledale ewes topped at £68 from Messrs Pattinson, Pinfold House, Bishop Auckland.

Messrs Smith & Shepherd, Glebelands sold a pen of 12 Swaledale ewes to make £67.

All classes of Cast Ewes were also sharper and many more could have been sold to advantage!
