On Monday 7th November 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – Yet another good entry of 101 prime bulls forward selling to a similar trade to that of last week. Topping the sale overall was the heaviest bull of the day at 869kgs a Limousin from Messrs Wilson, Reddings Farm, Moffat peaking at £2272.44 purchased by A & D Meats. 798kgs from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton sold to £2142.63 to Bowland Foods, Preston. Blondes sold to £2075.45 for 806kgs from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm, Penrith, purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Parthenaise to £1826.56 for 738kgs from Messrs Bradley, Marina House, Maryport. Top overall pence per kilo of 275.5p was paid to Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow, Wigton, for one of their Limousins selling to Bowland Food. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm sold their best to 271.50p purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Dairy bulls sold to a day’s top of £1387.82 for a 644kg Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor, Messrs Clark also sold the top two price per kilos of 215.5p for Friesians.

PRIME CATTLE – Good numbers with 67 forward selling to the same trade as last week. Topping the sale overall was again Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie selling there 786kg Charolais steer to £2047.53 and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Limousins to £2031.99 for a 727kg from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues to £1927.70 for a 740kg from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Top price per kilo steer of 279.6p was paid to Bothel Parks for one of their 727kg Limousin crosses purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farms, Wigton, sold their best to 277.50p for 623kgs and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Heifers sold to an overall top of £2023.22 for a 687kg Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton purchased by Owain Llyr. Charolais to £1873.13 for 675kgs from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie purchased by A & D Meats. Top overall pence per kilo of 308.6p was attained by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton with their 628kg Limousin cross purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton sold a good run of heifers to peak at 294.5p for 575kg Limousin cross to Steven Wilson Butcher, Corby Hill. Messrs Lawson Hundith House, Wigton also matched this price of 294.5p for 687kgs to Owain Llyr and finally best Charolais crosses to 277.5p from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Once again a great entry of 369 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with trade being good throughout with only 129 being beef bred. D A Harrison & Co’s run of outstanding cows topped at 848kg, 243.5p, £2064 and 818kg, 217.5p, £1779 and 722kg, 243.5p, £1758 for Limousin cross cows bought by Charles Kirkpatrick, Sean McGimpsey and Owain Llyr. Messrs Leiper, Bank Top’s run of outstanding heifers topped at 809kgs, 249.5p &2018 for a Charolais and 726kg, 234.5p & £1702 for a Limousin cross bought by Charles Kirkpatrick & Owain Llyr. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields sold a Limousin cow for 791kgs, 219.5p, £1736 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm sold two Limousin cows for 772kg, 224.5p, £1733 and 725kg, 235.5p £1707 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Michael Helliwell.

A massive entry of 240 dairy cast cows froward with Messrs Harrison, Dundraw farm run of Holstein cross topped at 810kg 189.5p, £1534 and 765kg, 187.5p £1434 bought by Les Fell & Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Vance & Son, Sloehabbert’s Holstein cross cows topped at 875kg, 164.5p £1439 to Charles Kirkpatrick. D A Harrison & Co sold a Holstein cross for 744kg, 191.5p, £1424 to Michael Helliwell. CAST BULLS – Only 8 stock sulls on offer Messrs Udale & Son, Sideway Bank sold their top priced Charolais stock bull for 1283kg, 148.5p & £1905 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Little, Greenhill sold their top priced Limousin stock bull to 977kg, 186.5p, £1822 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: A much improved trade was witnessed with a SQQ of 265ppk being achieved and a total sale average of 256.45p with all lambs seeing a lift on the week.  Topping the sale was a single Dutch Texel lamb from R & M Scott, Thirlwall Castle selling for £149.  Top price pence per kilo was from a pen of 3 from the same farm as well as a single from M & GS Nelson, Braithwaite Hall selling for 339.5ppk.  Suffolk topped at £138 from David Allen, Ellerslea.  Mules were once again very dear with top price coming for 28 from Foley Bros selling for £123.50.  Texel mules topped at £144 from J & D Martin, Boggle Hall selling for £144.  Both plain and good lambs met a serious trade throughout.  Blackfaced lambs topped at £101 from RG & LA Grieve & Son, Whiteside.  Many more lambs could be sold to advantage.

CAST EWES – Harrison and Hetherington conducted its sale of cast sheep on Monday 7th November. A mixture of sheep was presented with top price of £160 being reached by Mr Mark Batty, Flimby Hall. Mule ewes topped at £95 for a pen of 6 from JR & A Middleton, Stonehouse. Hill bred sheep topped at £60 from Rosalind Dean, Rose Cottage. Rams topped at £122 from E & P Skelton, Sycamore House. Good trade was witnessed leaving customers more than happy.
