On Monday 14th November 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A smaller show of 75 Prime bulls forward selling to a similar trade to that of last week.  Topping overall was an 849kg Limousin at £2406.92 from Messrs Watson, Sanders Close, Brampton and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold 771kgs to £2070.14 purchased by A & D Meats.  Charolais to £2000.46 and £1977.22 from Messrs Goldie, South Bower Houses, Dumfries.  Blondes to £1907.54 for a 777kg from Messrs Wilshaw, Oulton Hall, Wigton and Aberdeen Angus to £1753.05 for 870kgs from Messrs Lawson, South Farm, Newcastle.

Top overall pence per kilo of 283.5 went to the aforementioned 849kg Limousin from Sanders Close with a 699kg from the same home achieving 272.5 to Morgan Helliwell.

Dairy bred bulls sold to a day’s top of £1636.25 for a 770kg Montbeliarde from Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle purchased by Jewitt Meats.  Holsteins to £1450.89 for 882 kg from Messrs Armour, Milton Farm, Moffat purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE – A much smaller show of only 43 Prime steers and heifers forward seeing a sharper trade on the week with 10 selling over £1900 and six over £2000 to a days top of £2190.75 for a 762kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, Egremont and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby sold their best, a 731kg to £2116.25 and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Charolais sold to £2149.82 for a 753kg crossbred from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie.  Top pence per kilo of 289.50 was paid to Messrs Dent, Elm House for their aforementioned steer.  Heifers saw a days top of £2081.31 for a 741kg Limousin cross and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle.  Messrs Dent, Elm House sold a 658kg to £1898.33 and purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Great Orton Carlisle.  Charolais to £1968.74 for a 692kg from Messrs Kennedy, North Cowshaw, Lockerbie purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Top overall pence per kilo of 294.50 was paid to Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby for a 601kg and purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill, Lockerbie sold one of theirs to 293.50 and purchased by Bowland Foods

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A larger show of 375 cast cows was on offer with a good ring side of buyers ensuring a similar trade throughout.

Messrs Furlong & Co, Ridley Farm cows topped at 971kg, 208.5p and £2024 for a Charolais cross bullock bought by Alan Jarvis. Messrs Cowx & Son, Hudscales Limousin cross topped at 815kg, 243.5p, £1984 and 716kg, 248.5p, £9779 purchased by Alan Jarvis and Owain Llyr. Messrs Studholme & Son, Nealhouse Farms run of young Limousin heifers topped at 722kg, 270.5p, £1953 and 742kg, 262.5p, £1947 and 698kg, 254.5p, £1776 and finally 815kg, 224.5p £1829 all purchased by Owain Llyr. Crowhall Farms, Hexham run of cows topped at 710kg, 244.5p, £1735 for British Blue cross bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill run of cows topped at 716kg, 241.5p, £1729 for a Limousin cross purchased by Alan Jarvis. A plainer show of Dairy cast cows was on offer with Mr D J Harrison, Dumdraw Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 791kg, 186.5p, £1475 to Les Fell. Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower sold a Holstein cross cow for 831kg, 173.5p, £1441 to Sean McGimpsey. Hardgrove farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 876kg, 164.5p, £1441 to Les Fell. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor sold a run of Fleckveih heifers for 733kg, 195.5p, £1433 to Les Fell. Messrs Workman, Beeches run of Montbeliarde cows topped at 728kg, 187.5p, £1365 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Soulsby & Son, Williamsgill Farm sold the top priced Simmental stock bull for 1238kg, 143.5p £1776 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Robson & Partners, Laverock Hall sold the top priced British Blue bull for 886kg, 197.5p, £1749 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Richardson & Son, Courstein sold the top priced Angus stock bull for 1136kg, 147.5p, £1675 to Owain Llyr. Mr David Macgillivray, Foxfield sold the top priced Belted Galloway for 859kg, 159.5p, £1370 to Michael Helliwell.

PRIME SHEEP: A much larger show of prime sheep was forward at Borderway on Monday. A rise in prices in the last week saw number rise throughout the UK, this taking a slight shine off the trade, that being said a very useful trade for all classes was readily available. Leading the trade at £154 were 50kg Dutch Texel lambs shown by Messrs Wigham, Hargill House and purchased by John Penny & Sons, Leeds. Messrs Wigham also claimed the top price per head at 363.4p for a pair of 41kg lambs which sold to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston. Mules peaked at £126 for a pen from JW Story, Haltwhistle.

CAST EWES – Another strong show of ewes were presented to regular ring side of buyers with all classes being much dearer on the week.  Topping the sale was a pair of Suffolks from Messrs Fitzsimmon, Shawhead selling for £148.  Texels topped at £134 for a pen of 5 from M & A Faulder, Ewan Close. Mules topped at £98 from M Brown, Wetheral and Messrs Dixon, Whinney Hill.  Hill sheep topped at £82 for a Cheviot from R Moscrop & Son, Border Rigg.  Swaledale ewes topped at £69 for a pen of 6 from A J Stainton, Scalehouses.  Rams topped at £142 from TP Wigham, Hargill House for a Dutch Texel.
