On Monday 21st November 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A much smaller show of only 64 Prime bulls forward selling dearer once again on the week.  Six bulls sold over £2000 to a day’s overall top of £2943.68 for a 945kg British Blue cross from Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall, Carlisle purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  This bull was also top overall pence per kilo of 311.50p.  Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie sold a 932kg Limousin to £2576.98 and 815kg to £2261.63 purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin.  Messrs Quine, Ballakilley Farm, Isle of Man sold their 858kg Limousin to £2140.71 and Messrs Graham, Orchard Farm, Hawick sold their best to £2140.64 for 777kgs.  Aberdeen Angus sold to £1863.35 for a 759kg from Messrs Thomlinson, Long Park, Carlisle and purchased by A & D Meats.  Simmentals sold to £1784.23 for a 718kg crossbred from Messrs Mitchinson, Gallaberry, Brampton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House sold second top pence per kilo of 283.50 for a 624kg Limousin cross to Morgan Helliwell.  Dairy bred bulls to £1548.64 for a 761kg British Friesian from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton purchased by Jewitt Meats.  Holsteins to £1514.27 for 643kg from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle and top pence per kilo of 235.50 for the same animal.

PRIME CATTLE – A larger entry of 58 prime steers and heifers forward selling to a very good trade throughout.  Cattle sold over £1900 with eight selling at £2000 or over to a day’s top of £2101.95 for an 810kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle sold their best to £2047.95 for 738kgs purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Simmental crosses to £1917.36 for 781kgs from Messrs Spence, Roberthill, Lockerbie and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Belted Galloways sold to £1525 for 645kgs from Messrs MacGillivray, Foxfield, Carlisle and was purchased by Hartshead Meats.  Top pence per kilo steer was 288.50 for a 668 kg Limousin cross from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Appleby purchased by Mr Eric Hall,

Heifers peaked at £2081.63 for 793kgs from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Limousins to £2045.80 for a 661kg from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by Steven Wilsons Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle.  Top overall pence per kilo of 309.50p was also achieved by this same animal.  Messrs Jarman, Brow Top Farm, Workington sold 577kgs Limousin cross to 299.50p to Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax and Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby to 298.50p for 571kgs again to Brookwood Abattoir.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Once again a larger show of 378 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer. A total of 138 beef cows was forward with trade being 7.7p up on the week. Mr Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall run of 7 outstanding Limousin cows sold to average 743kg, 250.78, £1864 which topped at 818kg, 260.5p, £2130 and 702kg, 264.5p, £2015 and 661kg, 266.5p & £1761 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Messrs Charlton, Whiteside Farm sold the top price Belgian Blue cross cow for 775kg, 263.5p £2042 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Graham and Son, Orchard Farm sold a Limousin cross cow for 881kg, 226.5p £1995 and 831kg, 233.5p, £1940 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Dempster, Castlehill sold the top priced Charolais cross for 755kg, £1981 and 702kg, 263.5p, £1849 both bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Dodd, Tundergarth Mains run of cows topped at 861kg, 228.50, £1967 for a Limousin cross to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Wallace & Co Mains of Collin sold a Limousin cross cow for 675kg, 265.5p, £1792 bought by Owain Llyr. 240 Dairy Cast cows was on offer with a plainer show. Bluestone Farming’s run of Fleckvieh cross cows topped at 786kg, 210.5p, £1654 and 917kg, 169.5p £1554 and 668kg, 211.5p, £1412 for a Fleckvieh heifer purchased by Sean McGimpsey, Messrs Roberts and Alan Jarvis. Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot sold a Fleckvieh cow for 772kg, 194.5p £1501 to Alan Jarvis. Hardgrove Farms sold the top price Holstein cross cow for 877kg, 167.5p, £1468 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower’s Holstein cross cows topped at 894kg, 163.5p, £1461 and 810kg, 179.5p, £1453 bought by Sean McGimpsey and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Armstrong, Dykesfield farm sold a Fleckvieh cow for 806kg, 175.5p £1414 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Mattocks Aulby Farm sold Friesian heifers for 565kg, 222.5p, £1257 and 567kg, 208.5p, £1182 bought by Eric Hall and Jewitt meats. Messrs Gardhouse, Cumdivock House sold a Montbeliarde heifer for 640kg, 204.5p, £1308 to Thomas Fell. PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 21st of November Harrison and Hetherington conducted the sale of 2019 prime lambs in Borderway. A trade which saw good meated lambs meeting a phenomenal trade with the leaner sorts meeting a slight resistance. Topping the sale was a pen of Dutch Texel’s from R & M Scott, Thirlwall Castle who sold to Mr Mulholland, Great Orton. Beltex lambs topped at £144 from J Oliver & Son, Walton Woodhead for a strong single lamb. Mules topped at 117.5p from Kilnstown Farms Ltd. Texel’s topped at £148 from A & N Batty, Flimby Hall with Suffolk’s topping at £143 from Mr Richard Hodgson, Glassonby. A total sale average of £113.20 was achieved with an average of 251ppk. Topping the pence per kilo was a pen of 41 kilo Dutch Texel’s from R & M Scott, Thirlwall Castle to 366ppk.  Beltex lambs topped at 337.5p for a pen of 15 from DH & JM Murray, The Throp. Texels topped at 345ppk from M & GS Nelson, Braithwaite Halls. A reminder that next week is our Christmas sale of prime lambs with more needed to satisfy demand.

CAST EWES – The weekly sale of cast sheep saw a similar show in numbers and a lift in the trade. Topping the ewes at £178 was three Texel ewes from Messrs Reid, Bengall, Lockerbie. This was closely followed at £172 by a Bleu Du Maine from Messrs Abbott, Corrie Field. Following that at £146 was two Texel ewes again from Messrs Reid. Topping the hill section was also Messrs Reid, Bengall with two Cheviot ewes at £134. Mule ewes sold to £111 from Messrs Lawson, Highboon Wood. A smaller show of rams saw an improved trade. Topping the rams was a Badgerface Texel from Messrs McNeil, East Cottage.
