Borderway Christmas Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 28th November Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of Primestock. A great entry of 450 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were on offer on Monday.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 94 prime bulls froward selling to a marvellous trade throughout with 14 selling over £1900 and 7 selling over £2000 to a day overall top of £2550 for 1065kg Limousin from Messrs Scott, Dalton Hook, Lockerbie and purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith sold their best to £2288 for the first place limousine bull weighing 764kg and purchased by Morgan Helliwell. British Blues sold to a top of £2348 for the 754kg first placed any other breed bull from Messrs Jarman, Brow Top. Charolais sold to £2098 for 815kgs from Messrs Goldie, South Bower Houses purchased by Morgan Helliwell purchased by Bowland Foods. Galloways sold to £1606 for 719kgs from Klandyke Farm, Thornhill. Top Overall price per kilo was the first prize British Blue from Messrs Jarman achieving 311.5p and 301p for another. Limousins also hit £3 from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor. Black and White dairy bred cattle sold to £1449 from Messrs Salkeld, South View, Carlisle for 695kgs. Friesians sold to £1420 for 653gks from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Jewitt Meats. Messrs Graham also sold top price per kilo of 217.5p for another Friesian.

PRIME CATTLE: An excellent entry and show of 63 prime steers and heifers forward at the Borderway Christmas show and sale. The pre sale show was kindly sponsored by Grange Quarry, Lloyd Motor Group and Ineos Grenadier and ably judged by Alan Hall who was representing Frasers Butchery, 69 Hanover Street, Stranraer. Mr Hall who carried out and excellent job of judging awarded the champion to the 1st prize Limousin cross heifer from great supporters Messrs Dent, Elm House weighing 709kgs she went on to sell for the days overall top price of £3048 which equated to £4.30 per Kilo and was purchased by R & KP Mullholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle in reserve honours this was found in the 1st prize Limousin cross steer for another stanch H & H customer Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm weighing 688kgs this steer then sold to £3.90 a kilo equating to £2683 and purchased by Mr Hall for Fraser Butchers, Stranraer. Other highlights throughout the day saw 17 cattle sell over £2000 and 22 over £1900. In the steer section, £2297 seen achieved for 740kgs from Messrs Graham, Millerhill purchased by Mr Eric Hall. British Blues to £200twice by Messrs Nicholson, The Lake purchased by Pioneer Foods. Charolais to £1926 from Messrs Story, Limestone Cottage to Pioneer Foods and Galloway to £1671 for a 558kg steer from Kilnsown Farm purchased by R & JP Mullholland, Great Orton. Messrs Graham, Millerhill sold second top price per kilo of £3.10 and Messrs Dent, Elm House to 309.5p. Galloways to £3 from Kilnstown Farm. Other leading heifers highlights were £2489 for the second prize Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Dent, Elm House purchased by the judge Mr Hall. British Blue crosses to £2106 or a 685kg second prize from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill. Messrs Dent, Elm House was also second top price per kilo as 379.5p.

CAST COWS: Once again a massive show of 358 Cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with dead weight prices dropping the ring prices explode. 146 Beef cows to average an amazing 186.2p with 13 selling for over £2000 and 3 for over £3 a kilo. Messrs Telfer & Son, Newton High House sold 3 outstanding British Blue cows to average 915kg, 309.45p & £2832 which sold for 989kg, 314.5p, £3110 and 941kg, 314.5p, £2959 and 816kg, 297.5p, £2427 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick for two and David Holmes purchased one. Messrs Henderson & Son, Park House Farm sold a British Blue cow for 966, 305.5p, £2951 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Armstrong, Hich Tarns Farm sold a British Blue Cross Cow for 826kg, 277.5p, £2292 also to Owain Llyr. 212 Dairy cast cows were on offer with a mixed show forward, but trade jumped 9p on the week to average an amazing 138.5p. Messrs Workman, Beeches run of Montbeliarde cross cows topped at 870kg, 184.5p, £1605 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head run of Holstein cross cos topped at 901kg, 170.5p, £1563 and a Holstein cross heifer sold for 605kg, 189.5p, £1146 purchased by Les Fell. Messrs Holliday, Newbrampton Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 858lg, 171.5p, £1471 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Moffat & Co, Kirtlebank Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 817kg, 178.5p, £1458 to Les Fell. PRIME SHEEP: On Monday the 28th November 2022 H&H held their annual Christmas show and sale of prime sheep. A fabulous entry of show sheep the largest in some time with over 300 head forward for judge Mr Morgan Helliwell to cast his eye over. It was his first prize pen of 4 Beltex lambs shown by Messrs Dempster, Castle Hill which went on to claim the Championship Rosette. Morgan backed his judgement and purchased the champion for £450 a head. The Reserve Champion pen from Messrs Story, Woodhead earlier won the A.O.B Continental class then sold at £200 per head to the Judge. Morgan Also bought his first prize single lamb at £205 this lamb was shown by McEwan, Fairwell Grange.

CAST EWES & RAMS: On Monday 28th November Harrison and Hetherington held its weekly sale of Cast sheep in Borderway. Another strong entry was presented with all classes of ewes being well up on the week. Topping the sale was a Texel ram from LW & CM Todd, Longhurst for £158. Hill ewes met a serious trade the top price was for a pen of 3 cheviots from Messrs Graham, Hill Head at £139. Mules topped at £110 from JH Quine, Isle of Man. Swaledale ewes topped at £94 from GR Morton, Church Farm, Penrith. A fantastic entry for the time of year.
