On Monday 5th December 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.
PRIME BULLS - A larger entry of 107 prime bulls were on offer to a keen ringside of buyers ensuring a sharper trade. Messrs Cockburn, Kingside Farm sold the top priced British Blue bull for 891kg at 304.5p totalling £2713 bought by Bowland Foods. Messrs Watson & Co, Bowsden Moor Farm sold the top priced Limousin bull for 877kg at 280.5p totalling £2459 bought by Jewitt Meats. Messrs Dickinson, High House sold a 32 month old Limousin Bull for 948kg at 255.5p totalling £2422 bought by Jewitt Meats. Messrs Brannen, Scar Top sold a British Blue bull for 765kg at 307.5p totalling £2352 also to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Nimmo, Bogside Farm run of Limousin bulls sold to a top of 821kg at 273.5p totalling £2245 and 735kg at 296.5p totalling £2179 bought by Messrs Roberts & Jewitt Meats. Messrs Sisson & Son, Kelbarrow’s Limousin bulls topped at 645kg at 289.5p totalling £1867 bought by Morgan Helliwell.

PRIME CATTLE – A small and mixed show of 45 prime cattle was on offer with trade for all classes being sharper on the week. Messrs Stamper & Son, Rose Farm’s run of cattle topped at 800kg, 262.5p, £2100 for a Simmental cross bullock and 671kg, 274.5p, £1841 for an Angus cross heifer both purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Livingston, Kirtlevale sold a 533kg, 311.5p, £1660 for Limousin cross heifer bought by Bowland Foods. Messrs Dent, Elm House sold Limousin cross bullocks for 656kg, 277.5p, £1911 bought by Pioneer Foods and a Charolais Heifer sold for 587kg, 298.5p, £1752 to Ballard’s Butchers

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – Once again a large entry of 322 cast cows was forward with only 115 beef cows. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow for 977kg at 219.5p totalling £2144 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside sold a Limousin cow for 923kg at 227.5p totalling £2099 bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Nixon, Hunters Hall sold two outstanding Limousin cows for 807kg at 259.5p totalling £2094 and 828kg at 239.5p totalling £1983 purchased by Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Nimmo, Bogside Farm’s run of Limousin cows topped at 759kg at 252.5p totalling £1916, 878kg at 218.5p totalling £1914, 720kg at 265.5p totalling £1911 and 656kg at 273.5p totalling £1794 purchased by Owain Llyr(x2), Messrs Roberts and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold the top priced Charolais cow for 774kg at 239.5p totalling £1853 to Owain Llyr.
207 dairy cast cows were forward with all classes taking a large lift again. Messrs Watson & Co, Bowsden Moor Farm sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 741kg at 215.5p totalling £1596 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Henderson & Son, Park House Farm sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 883kg at 177.5p totalling £1567 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Seymour Farms sold the top priced Montbelairde x cow for 903kg at 167.5p totalling £1512 to Sean McGimpsey. PRIME SHEEP: A larger show of 2340 prime lambs forward this week saw best types & heavy lambs experience great demand throughout, commercial types were subject to more resistance on the week. An overall average of 250p, SQQ 255p which equates to £114.39 per head was recorded. Two vendors shared the top price per head of £160 this was achieved for heavy Beltex lambs from Tanya Graham, Harley Croft, Wigton and Tom and Julia Airey, New Grange Farm, Dearham selling to Robert Skelton & Morgan Helliwell respectively Tom and Julia sold 50 lambs for the days leading average of £142.31 per head. Messrs Carruthers, Grassgarth, Wigton sold the leading pen per kilo at 346.2p for a pen of 5 39kg Beltex lambs.

CAST EWES – A much larger show was presented with all classes bring dearer on the week. Topping the sale was a single Texel ewe from Mr Pearson, Wavercroft selling for £188. Beltex topped at £148 from Messrs Maughan, Beck Farm for a pen of 3. Mules topped at £109 for a pen of 13 from R & E Hodgson, White House. Hill ewes topped at £96 from Mr Harrison, Aimshaugh, Alston. Swaledale ewes topped at £77 from TP Wigham, Hargill House. Rams topped at £118 for two from AJ & A Mackintosh, Home Farm. A good show was witnessed with all classes keenly bid for.
