Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual Christmas Show & Sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 3830 sheep were forward consisting of 3,180 prime lambs, 538 cast sheep and 112 store lambs.

Topping the sale at £510 and 1243.9p/kg were the overall champion pair of lambs which were the first placed lightweight Beltex cross lambs weighing 41kg and were consigned by Messrs Burbridge, Park Farm, Stamford. Our show judge Messrs Clare Mellin of Croppers Butchers and Deli was the successful purchaser of these champion lambs for their butchers shop in Accrington.

Clare had a truly outstanding show of 75 pen of lambs put out in front of her. The quality of these lambs was second to none and would be rivalled anywhere in the country with them been a true credit to all exhibitors. Thanks goes to Clare for her judging expertise and carrying out the judging in such a able and efficient manner.

The reserve overall championship was awarded to the first placed pair of Charollais cross lambs weighing 44kg and selling for £200 (454.5p/kg) from Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield which also went on to sell to Croppers Butchers & Deli.

Messrs Slater also sold 37kg Beltex cross lambs to make £159 (429.7p/kg) with a pen of 41kg lambs from this home making £160 (390.2pp/kg)

Jojo Andrews, York sold a pair of 43kg Beltex cross lambs to make £170 (395.3p/kg)

Messrs Dinsdale, High Field, Penrith sold a pen of 39kg Beltex cross lambs to make £157 (402.6p/kg).

Messrs Fell, Chapel Farm, Keswick sold a pen of ten 37kg Dutch Texel cross lambs to make £145 (391.9p/kg)

Texel cross lambs sold to £169 for 60kg lambs from Messrs Elliott, Askrigg Hall, Penrith.

Mule lambs topped at £132 for a pen from Messrs Fairburn, Ripon which were bought by D. Towers.

Good meated pens of heavy Suffolk cross lambs were good to sell with Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown selling a pen of ten 53kg lambs to make £134.

This same home also sold a pen of 27 48kg Suffolk cross lambs to make £124 (258.3p/kg) and another pen of 21 48kg Suffolk cross lambs to make £123.50 (257.3p/kg)

Blackfaced lambs sold to £110.50 and 244.4p/kg for a pen of ten 45kg lambs also from Smalmstown Farm, Longtown.

Messrs Elliott, Espland House, Penrith sold 55kg Texel cross lambs to make £160.

An SQQ average of 272.3p/kg and an overall average of 266.3p/kg for 3180 lambs was achieved.

43 pens and 142 lambs sold between £150-£510

58 pens and 299 lambs sold between 350-1243.9p/kg

Cast sheep topped at £255 for a pen of five Texel cross ewes from Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield.

The consignment of 20 ewes from Whiteley Hey sold to average £213.20.

The first prize pen of Continental ewes was awarded by our Judge Mr J Birkbeck, Soulby to a pen of five Texel cross ewes from Messrs Dodd, Skylin, Temple Sowerby which went on to sell for £230.

Messrs Slater also sold a pen of eight Texel cross ewes to make £212 and a pen of five Beltex cross ewes making £200 also from this home.

First prize hill ewes was awarded to a pen of five Rough Fell ewes which went on to sell for £106 from Messrs Dargue, Smardale Hall.

Swaledale ewes topped at £81 for a pen of six from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton.

Cast Rams topped at £206 for a pair of Texels from Messrs Longrigg, Breaks Hall.

A sale average of £94.04 was achieved for 538 cast sheep sold.
