Stair Holstein Dispersal Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

STAIR TOP WITH A TASTY CROWN ROYAL

A huge crowd of Holstein breeders and enthusiasts from across the UK and Ireland travelled to the Borderway Sale Centre to attend the dispersal sale of the Stair pedigree Holstein herd owned by the Kennedy family from Ayrshire.  A large part of the crowd was friends and neighbours who packed the ring side which saw a brisk trade top at 8,000gns with the overall average coming to just over £3000 with almost 100 animals selling for or more than £3000.

The Stair herd was established by Hugh Kennedy in the early eighties when he invested in several top Holstein cow families such as the Chief Faith, Roxy and Supra who all appeared in the leading prices.  All of the milking cows sold in this wonderful sale were a result of astute breeding decisions made by Hugh’s son Jim who sadly passed away in 2019.

The Roxy herd nominated all the leading prices with three sisters all competing for the top spot.  Stair Royal Roxy topped the sale at 8,000gns and was purchased by the Smith family from Greentowers Farm near Lanark.  Royal Roxy was sired by Blondin Crown Royal and bred from an Excellent 94 dam sired by Carldanton Atwood Admirer (He was an Atwood son from Lavenham Adeen) followed by eleven generations of high scored cows going back to the Queen of the Breed.  Royal Roxy was due in January to Boghill Glamour Santos.

Her sister sired by Stair Zorro sold for 7,500gns to James McNeil owner of the Cairnpat Holstein herd in Stranraer.  She was due in February with her fourth and was carrying a Lambda female pregnancy.  This super balanced cow was a member of the winning Winters Herd Team in 2022.

Stair Silver Roxy sold for 5,500gns to John Cowan from Stranraer.  This super Silver daughter was another sister to the two top sellers and had recently classified Very Good as a two year old.

Toping the heifer calves was at 5,100gns was Stair Pepper Rox who was sired by Delaberge Pepper and was bred from an Excellent 94 dam by Atlas followed by and Excellent 94 grand dam with Glenridge Citation Roxy EX97 as the 6th dam.  This super built heifer was purchased by the Donald family from Ling Farm in Cumbria.

The Supra cow family also dominated the leading prices with Stair Galantis Supra 2 selling for 5,500gns to the Kinloch family from Dumbarton.  This classy young cow was wired by Wormanby Galantis and had won Supreme Champion at Tarbolton Show in the Summer.  She was recently classified Very Good 88 and completed nine generation of cow to classify in the top grades.

Stair Lambda Laurie sold for 5,800gns to the Templeton family from Knowe farm in Ayrshire.  She was bred from a prolific line of the Comestar Laurie Sheik family with her first three dams all winning their class at the Scottish Calf show as yearlings.  Lambda Laurie was due in the Summer.

At the end of the sale Stair Chief Erle sold for 5,200gns who was purchased by Jim Henderson from Catrine in Ayrshire.  She was sired by Stantons Chief and bred from six Excellent dams from the Erle cow family that bred the record breaking Formation Erle who sold for 90,000gns in 2003.

The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place on the 14th December and features 100 dairy cattle in Border & Lakeland Club show and sale.   Catalogues for this sale can be viewed online at www.harrisonandhetherington.co.uk or can be order from the Pedigree Office 01228 406230.
