Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

STOWBECK TOP WITH DROGO DAUGHTER

The final Border & Lakeland sale of 2022 had to contend with mother nature as the sub zero temperatures played havoc with both the consignors and buyers travel plans.  For those buyers who made it to Borderway they did have a quality group to select from with trade topping at 4,100gns with the overall average coming to £2549 with almost 25% of the animals selling for or more than £3000.

The show was sponsored by Dugdale Nutrition and was judged by one of Lancashire’s up and coming breeders, Tom Hull from Gibstick Hall farm owner of the Redhead Holstein prefix.  His Overall Champion went to a super stylish and silky hided heifer, Espland Apps Sharon who was consigned by Alan Cannon from near Appleby.  She was sired by Lindenright Apps and had an udder that would grace any National Show ring.  She sold for 3,100gns to Mr Coulthurst from near Preston.

The Reserve Champion went to the winning cow Greengrass Iota Ada who was consigned by Adam Mares from Hillock Farm in Darwen, Lancashire.  This super powerful framed cow was sired by Alta Iota and had produced over 12000 in her first lactation.  She sold well below her true value going to the Baltier Farming Company near Newton Stewart for 2,000gns.

The Stowbeck herd sold 11 heifers to average £2653 and topped the overall trade at 4,100gns for Stowbeck Drogo Mavis who was purchased by the Baltier Farming Company near Newton Stewart.  She was sired by ALH Drogo and was bred from an Airintake dam that gave over 15000kgs in her second lactation.  Other impressive heifers from this home included Stowbeck Meter Jeanie who sold for 3,400gns to Mr Coulthurst from near Preston.

Studdah WW King Doc Maude sold for 3,800gns and was consigned by James Pratt & James Robinson from near Leyburn in North Yorks.  Sired by King Doc and bred from an impressive line of the Maude family going back to River Dale Triple Threat May the dam of the Reserve All Canadian winner Fradon Tab Maude.   This amazing uddered cow no joins the herd of Mr Coulthurst from near Preston.

Balcurvie Holsteins from Fife had four very milky heifers selling to average £2730 and topped at 3,700gns for Balcurvie Apps Gloria.  Gloria was sired by Lindenright Apps and was bought by Mr Coulthurst from near Preston.

The Holehouse herd owned by the Logan family who farm near Kilburnie in Ayrshire were first time consignors to the Border & Lakeland sale.  The averaged £2651 and topped at 3,300gns for Holehouse Rager Patsy Red, she was sired by Rager Red and bred from a milky Red & White dam sired by Palmyra Smptoc Manny Red.

Gary McCormick from Dumfries sold Ceeingred Rubels Scarlet Red for 3,300gns to Mr Coulthurst from near Preston.  She was the first milking daughter of Rubels Red to sell at Borderway and was bred from an excellent line of Red & White cow going back to the 1982 Royal Winter Fair Champion, Continental Scarlet Red , the first Red & White Holstein to gain the National Canadian title.

The Border & Lakeland Herd competition was won recently by the Stowbeck Holstein herd.  They consigned 8  special heifers many bred from deep cow families and all giving oceans of milk to average £2979.  This impressive group topped at 3,400gns for Stowbeck Drogo Mavis who was purchased by Mr Coulthurst from near Preston.

The Annandale sold two bulls at the end of the sale both selling for 4,000gns. The first was for Annadale Spontaneous, he was a son of Unix from the Prelude Spottie cow family and the second Annandale Kimbo who was a son of Dalliance.  This fine bull was purchase by Mr Mattocks near Penrith.
