On Monday 19th December 2022 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A smaller show all round on Monday with 306 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle forward.
PRIME BULLS – A small show of 39 prime bulls was on offer with trade bring well up on the week. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm sold 3 Limousin bulls for 733kg at 301.5p totalling £2210, 717kg at 299.5p totalling £2147 and 845kg at 295.5p totalling £2496 bought by Bowland Foods (x2) and Morgan Helliwell. Messrs MacArthur & Co, Nunncree Farm sold the top priced Luing bull for 845kg at 254.5p totalling £2150 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Workman, Beeches sold the top priced Montbeliarde x bull for 778kg at 249.5p totalling £1941 to A & D Meats. Mr David Graham, South Lambhill sold the top priced Friesian bull for 682kg at 228.5p totalling £1558 and another at 573kg to 233.5p totalling £1337 both bought by Jewitt Meats.

PRIME CATTLE – Only 29 prime cattle were on offer with a mixed show forward however trade would be sharper on the week. Messrs Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall sold the top priced Limousin x bullock for 822kg at 244.5p totalling £2009 to Eric Hall. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake’s run of British Blue x bullocks topped at 698kg at 284.5p totalling £1985 bought by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Stamper & Son, Rose Farm’s run of heifers topped at 674kg at 269.5p totalling £1816 for a Charolais x, 698kg at 253.5p totalling £1769 for an Aberdeen Angus x, 629kg at 279.5p totalling £1758 for a Limousin x purchased by Pioneer (x2) and Eric Hall.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A great show of 238 cast cows were forward with all vendors getting a Christmas treat with a trade out of this world. Only 57 beef cows on offer which averaged 202.1p being up 23p on the week. DA Harrison & Son, Hill House Farm’s run of 20 outstanding cows sold to average 752kg at 220p totalling £1655 and topped at 824kg at 283.5p totalling £2336 for a British Blue x and 828kg at 268.5p totalling £2223 for a Limousin x bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Alan Jarvis. Mr Hamish Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold the top priced Charolais cow for 957kg at 225.5p totalling £2158to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm sold a Limousin cow for 863kg at 237.5p totalling £2049 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Atkinson & Son, Green Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 671kg at 248.5p totalling £1667 bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Fisher, Lairdlaugh’s run of Limousin x cows topped at 666kg at 238.5p totalling £1588 to Michael Helliwell.
180 dairy cast cows were forward with a massive lift in the trade this week. Bluestone Farming sold the top priced Montbeliarde x cow for 779kg at 204.5p totalling £1593 and Fleckvieh x cows and heifers from the same good home sold for 734kg at 212.5p totalling £1559, 832kg at 186.5p totalling £1551, 652kg at 235.5p totalling £1535 and 737kg at 207.5p totalling £1529 bought by Les Fell (x2) and Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Dockeray, Kelsick House sold Holstein x cows for 811kg at 183.5p £1488, 862kg at 167.5p totalling £1443 and 794kgs at 177.5p totalling £1409 bought by Jewitt Meats and Phillip Bowes (x2). Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown Farm sold Holstein x cows for 891kg at 162.5p totalling £1447 and 815kg at 174.5p totalling £1422 bought by Messrs Roberts and Sean McGimpsey. CAST BULLS – Messrs Sherwen, Greenmoorside sold the only Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 984kg at 188.5p totalling £1854 to Jewitt Meats.

PRIME SHEEP: Another strong show of 2138 quality lambs forward meeting a much-improved trade for all classes. A total sale average of 257ppk was achieved with an SQQ of 263p. A fantastic show of Beltex lambs averaged £131. Topping the sale was a 57kg Beltex from RD & P Urwin, Hill House selling for £161. Texels topped at £159 from Izzy Story, Jackson Rigg with Suffolks topping at £145 from Matthew Story, Jackson Rigg. However, one of the highlights of the day was from T & J Airey, New Grange whose run of 45 Beltex’s averaged £149.93. Hill sheep met a good trade with a single Cheviot from T Chalmers & Son, Canonbie for £134. Mules topped at £122.50 for a pen of 10 from JW Smith-Jackson, Hightown. Topping the pence per kilo was a pair of 42 kilo Dutch Texels from R & M Scott, Thirlwall Castle selling for 350ppk. Beltex topped at 335ppk for a pair of 44 kilo lambs from Messrs Hall, Lanerton. CAST EWES – A useful show of ewes once again many more could have been sold to sellers advantage. An overall average of £107.00 per head was attained. Topping at £161 for a solid Beltex cross from M W Shirvinton, Woodbank. Texel ewes topped at £159 from W E Lee, Lintley Farm. While Cheviot ewes topped at £107 from O Harrison, Aimshaugh. Swaledales topped at £85 from J & M Fisher, Reaygarth.
