Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 2nd January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock.

PRIME BULLS – A good entry of 72 prime bulls forward for the first sale of 2023.  Trade was impeccable, one of the dearest every seen at this centre for all classes.  Ten bulls sold over £2000 to a day’s overall top of £2783 for a 911kg Limousin from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Luings sold to £2289.28 for 896kgs from Messrs Crerar, New Mains, Dunbar.  Aberdeen Angus crosses to £2269.41 for 858 kgs from Messrs Hyslop, Gillrig, Lockerbie and Simmentals from the same home to £2110.58 for 789 kgs. A 32 month old 889 Kg Limousin from Messrs Harkness, Netherall, Dumfries achieved £2040.26.

Five bulls sold over £3.00p/kg to a day’s top of 3.14p for a 721kg Limousin from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Brampton and a further two to 305.5p and 304.5p.   Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning Farm, Keswick sold to 308.5p for 772kgs and 300.5p for 729kg Limousin.

Black and whites sold extremely well and peaked at £1569.15 for a 634kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Taylor, East Park, Carlisle and Friesians to £1526.35 for 668 kgs from Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith. Holstein Friesians sold to £1420.24 for 656 kgs from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown.  Top pence per kilo overall was achieved twice at 248.5p firstly by Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton with a 586kg Friesian and secondly by Messrs Taylor, East Park, Carlisle for a 571kg Holstein Friesian.

PRIME CATTLE – A very small offering of prime steers and heifers forward at the first sale of the year.  Due to the lack of numbers trade was buoyant and saw a day’s top of £1999.69 for a 686kg Limousin cross steer, this was also top overall pence per kilo to 291.5p consigned by Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale.  Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle sold another Limousin weighing 705kg to £1942.28.  Messrs Nicholson, The Lake sold the top British Blue cross also, selling to £1993 for 703kg purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Heifers peaked at £1780.17 for a 686kg Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle purchased by Mr Eric Hall.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A great entry of 206 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on the 2nd January.  Messrs Kearton, Wyse Hill Farm run of cows topped at 1014kg, 184.5p totalling £1870 and 731kg, 221.5p £1619 purchased by Alan Jarvis and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Watson, Sanders Close sold Limousin cows for 824kg, 223.5p £1841 and 751kg, 223.5p £1678  again bought by Alan Jarvis and Michael Helliwell.  D A Harrison & Co, Hill House Farm, run of cows topped at 694kg 246.5p £1710 and 751kg, 235.5p £1768 and 818kg £1779 and 740kg, 226.5 £1676 all for Limousin x bought by Alan Jarvis (x3) and Jewitts.

D A Harrison sold the top price British Blue x cow for 881kg, 186.5p £1643 and a Simmental x cow for 860kg, 189.5p £1629 bought by Sean McGimpsey and Alan Jarvis. 

141 dairy cast cows were in great demand.  Castlesteads Farms run of Holstein x cows topped at 843kg, 175.5p, £1479 and 800 kg 182.5p, £1460 bought by Michael Helliwell and Sean McGimpsey.  Low House Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 849kg 172.5p £1464 to Les Fell.  Messrs Armstrong, Dykesfield Farm, sold a Holstein x Cow for 905kg, 155.5p £1407 to Eric Hall. Messrs Shepherd, Crownstone Farm, sold a Holstein x heifer for 566kg 197.5p £1117 to David Holmes who also bought Messrs Ramsey, Dockray Hall heifer which sold for 514kg 194.5p, £999.

Messrs Edgar & Co, Whitecroft Mains sold a Holstein x heifer for 607kg, 192.5p £1168 to Alan Jarvis.  East Scales sold two Holstein heifers for 578kg, 192.5p £1112 and 646kg, 192.5p £1243 both to David Holmes.  Messrs Buckle, Bleathgill sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1069kg 206.5p £2207 to Jewitts.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 2nd January 2023 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep. A few more lambs forward this week met a very much two tiered trade with heavy lambs and best quality types very good to sell. The edge is slightly off commercial types especially 47 – 48kg hoggs, this resulted in an overall average of £113.71 per head. Elliot Metcalf, High Old Shields led the way this week selling his of lambs for £152 a head to Bowland Foods Ltd. A pair of vendors Tom & Julia Airey, New Grange & John Fell, Stanger Hill sold lambs at £150 a head. Ann Little, The Hollands topped per kilo at 356.1pph for a pair of Beltex lambs selling to Vivers, Scotlamb. Messrs Spedding, Stoneflatts lead the heavy lambs with Texel’s to £142 with Foley Bros, Mirlaw House leading the Suffolk’s at £142 per head.

CAST EWES – On Monday 2nd of January, Harrison and Hetherington conducted the opening 2023 sale of cast sheep & rams in Borderway. A much larger show of ewes was presented to a larger ringside of buyers. Topping the sale was a pen of 3 Texel ewes from Mr Hewetson, Lords Close selling for £186. Suffolk’s topped at £142 from Mr T Chalmers & Co, Outer Woodhead. Mules topped at £97for a pen of 20 from D, Robson & Son, Merryshield. Hill Sheep topped at £119 for 3 cheviots from D Graham, Hillhead. Swaledales topped at £66 G R, Morton, Church Farm. Blue Faced Leicester’s topped at £138 from Dan Charnock, Millholme. Rams topped at £142 for a Texel ram from Mr Oliver Harrison, Aimshaugh. A lot more ewes can be sold to the vendor’s advantage.
