On Monday 9th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock.
PRIME BULLS – A good show of 107 Prime bulls forward receiving once again another flyer of a trade. Less quality was on offer throughout, despite this, twelve bulls sold over £1900 with eleven selling over £2000 to a days top of £2431.52 for a 937kg Limousin from Messrs Wilson, Reddings Farm, Moffat purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Charolais to £2264.61 for 822kg from Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan, a 749kg British Blue from Messrs Coates, Rainscar, Settle achieving £2228.28 purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Top pence per kilo overall was a joint at 302.5 firstly achieved by Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle for a 780kg Limousin and secondly by Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick for a 752kg Limousin once again. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton sold a 711kg Limousin to 301.5.
Dairy bred bulls to £1461.60 for a 672kg Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie and £1437.68 for a 661kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith. Top pence per kilo of 221.50 for a 587kg Montbelairde from Messrs Salkeld, South View, Carlisle. Friesian to 219.50 weighing 609kg from Messrs Preston, Wed Holme, Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE – A much larger entry of 81 Prime steers and heifers forward with ten selling over £1950 and seven sold our £2000 to a days overall top of £2162.66 for a 771kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle to £2145.64 for 776kg both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle sold 758 kgs to £2126.19. Dairy cross steers to £1801.50 for 765kgs from Messrs Barker, Little Broomhills, Carlisle . Top price per kilo steer of 301.50p was achieved by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton selling 646kg to Owain Llyr, Ruthin.
Heifers seen a days top of £2043.42 for 701 kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Charolais to £2007.78 for 745kg from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top overall pence per kilo of 339.5p was paid to Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton for a 537kg Limousin purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth to 307.50p for a 615kg Limousin . Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm, Bishop Auckland sold a further two to 304.p and 303.5p for 604kg and 540 kg Limousins.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A massive entry of 613 cast cows and prime cattle was on offer. The largest entry of 433 cast cows and stock bulls In the UK with 136 beef cows sold to average an amazing 197.7p which was up 12.9on the week and 11 over £2000.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 9th January 2023 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep. Numbers remained steady on the week with all classes remarkably returning higher averages on the week much to contrary of pre-sale predictions and other outlets returns since last Monday with an average of 252p and SQQ od 264p recorded. Grahame Hewitt, Cardewlees Farm headed today’s trading selling hoggs to £150 purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Beltex lambs from Mark Bell, Winterhope led per Kilo with a pen of 5 selling at 347.5pph.
