Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 3,079 sheep were forward consisting of 2,527 prime hoggs and 552 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £172 were a pen of nine 44kg Beltex cross hoggs from Messrs Simpson, Highscale Farm, Wigglesworth.

Topping at 406.4p/kg were a pen of 39kg Beltex cross hoggs which made £158.50 from Messrs Dinsdale, High Field, Morland.

Messrs Wynne, Hall Farm House, Derbyshire sold a pen of twelve 43kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £164.

Messrs Raine, West Lea, Appleby sold a pen of 38kg hoggs to make £153 (402.6p/kg)

Messrs Wynne, Derbyshire sold a pen of 39kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £156 (400p/kg)

Messrs Tiplady, Red House Farm, Barnard Castle sold a pen of 37kg hoggs to make £148 (400p/kg)

Messrs Simpson, Highscale Farm sold a pen of 10 41kg hoggs to make £160.50 (391.5p/kg), a pen of 9 38kg hoggs to make £151.50 (398.7p/kg) and a pen of eleven 39kg hoggs to make £153.50 (393.6p/kg).

The consignment of 58 hoggs from Highscale Farm sold to average 40.7kg £156.59 (383.8p/kg)

Messrs Foster, Fordham Farm, York sold a pen of six 38kg hoggs to make £150.50 (396p/kg) with another pen of 19 38kg hoggs making £150 (394.7p/kg) also from this home.

Good quality heavy hoggs were a strong trade with Messrs Lee, Carkin Moor selling a pen of four 58kg hoggs to make £160.

An SQQ average of 260p/kg and an overall sale average of 249.3p/kg for 2527 hoggs which includes 830 horned and Mule hoggs.

33 pens and 191 hoggs sold between £150-£200

58 pens and 326 hoggs sold between £140-£200

52 pens and 295 hoggs sold between 350-406p/kg

782 Beltex cross hoggs sold to average £134.35 & 323p/kg

35kg fed Swaledale hoggs sold to make £75.50 (215.7p/kg) from Messrs Wearmouth, Parkside, Barnard Castle.

Mr Skelton, The Cottage, Newby very kindly donated a hogg to be sold in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity which sold for £200 and was purchased by Morgan Helliwell and Ashfold Quality Meats. Morgan offered the hogg for sale for a second time and was purchased for £200 selling to Yorkshire Halal Meats.

Cast sheep were a sharper trade all round with this section topping at £180 for a pen of six Texel cross ewes from Messrs Lee, Carkin Moor Farm, Richmond.

Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield sold a Charollais cast ram to make £180.

Beltex cross ewes sold to £175 for a pair from Messrs Lee, Carkin Moor Farm.

Blackfaced ewes sold to £81 for a pen of nine from Messrs Birkbeck, Decklyn, Soulby.

Swaledale ewes sold to £80 from Messrs Allinson, West Briscoe, Barnard Castle.

Messrs Foster, West End Farm, Barnard Castle sold a pen of 13 Swaledale ewes to make £78.

Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, Soulby sold a pen of 15 Swaledale ewes to make £74.
