On Monday 16th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock.
PRIME BULLS – Yet another fantastic entry of 112 prime bulls froward seeing a slight step off the gas in trade but the previous two weeks have been exceptional. 18 bulls sold over £1900 and 12 sold over £2000 to a day’s overall top of £2518.65 for an 870kg Limousin in from local farmer Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith this was purchased by A & D Meats. The same vendors also sold 886kg to £2423.21 to Bowland Foods. Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle sold 796kg to £2200.83, Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton sold two bulls at 747kg to £2222.33 to Jewitt Meats and 755kg to £2200.83 bought by A & D Meats. Messrs Cooper, Hallmoor, Carlisle sold 785kgs to £2107.73 to Messrs Kirkpatrick. British Blues sold to £2150.41 for 718kgs from Messrs Watret, Maulscastle, Annan the same vendors also sold 701kg to £2085.48 and 683kg to £2045.59 all purchased by Bowland Foods. Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to £2034.25 for 971kgs from Messrs Currie Skewbridge Farm, Dumfries. Top overall pence per kilo of 299.30p was achieved the times, first by Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm for a 795kg Limousin and Messrs Watret, Maulscastle sold two British Blues to the same money for 683kg & 718kg. Black and White bulls sold to a top of £1532.13 for a 721kg Friesian from Messrs Hewitson, King Hill, Brampton purchased by Jewitt Meats. Holsteins sold to £1489.57 for 803kg from Messrs Tattersall, Langholm and finally top price per kilo of 213.50p was achieved twice firstly by Messrs Crozier, Cowlyers, Silloth with their Holstein Friesian and secondly by Messrs Preston, Wedholme, Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE – Yet another good entry and show of 66 prime steers and heifers forward selling at slightly less money on the week. Top overall at £2115.84 went to a 768 kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold two to £2091.32 for 776 kg and £2030.73 for 762kgs and Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle to £2019.60 for a 720kg. British Blues sold to £1989.68 from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake. Top pence per kilo steer was 280.50p for the aforementioned Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill purchased by Pioneer Foods.
Heifers sold to £1993.38 for a 693kg Limousin cross for Petteril Hill Farm, selling to Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle to £1971.50 for 681kg and Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton to £1939.70 for 652kg all purchased by Steven Wilson. Charolais to £1868.70 for 696kgs from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald Farm, Dumfries and purchased by Black Brow Abattoir, Wigton. Top pence per kilo overall was a Limousin cross 652kg from Miller Hill achieving 297.5p and Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill sold a 614kg Limousin to 295.00p purchased by A & D Meats.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – 302 cast cows were forward with all classes up on the week. 99 beef cows sold to average 200.7p up 3p on the week. Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains sold two British Blue cows for 987kg, 273.5p, £2699 and 840kg, 294.5p, £2473 both to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Watson, Sanders Close run of Limousin cows topped at 840kg, 250.5p, £2104 and 674kg, 257.5p, £1735 bought by Les Fell and Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold two outstanding cows one a Limousin which sold for 842kg, 249.5p, £2100 and a British Blue cross which sold for 778kg, 261.5p, £2004 to Les Fell and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm sold a Limousin cow for 766kg, 259.5p, £1987 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Cooper, Hallmoor sold the top priced Charolais cross cow for 915kg, 215.5p, £1969 to Charles Kirkpatrick. 203 dairy cast cows sold to average an amazing 152.2p up 2p on the week. PRIME SHEEP: Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime hoggs, a sharp decline in trade coupled with a flurry of snow restricted numbers with vendors who braced it being rewarded with a trade 25p per kilo ahead of Thursday levels. Top today was £152 achieved for heavy hoggs from Messrs Toppin, Bascodyke, Armathwaite selling to Morgan Helliwell. Willy Laird, Unity followed closely at £151 for a very smart Dutch Texel lamb selling to Michael Lomax. Peter McCune, Farewell Grange sold the top pence per kilo at 339.5p to Robert Skelton.

CAST EWES – Cast ewes were a flying trade today at Borderway with a shortage of big strong continentals. All classes would be sharper and many more could have been sold with a sale average of £112 per head. Topping at £140 for a pair of Bluefaced Leicester’s from CJ & KJ Peacock, Infield. Suffolks topped at £134 from O Harrison, Aimshaugh while Swales topped at £83 from JW Smith-Jackson, Hightown.
